TANJUNG PIAI: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) has dismissed Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng calls for the party to relinquish its control over Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) if they want more funds for the institution.

"I think it is best to just ignore him as he has nothing else to say.

"Let the people judge for themselves," Wee said, adding that he would raise the matter in Parliament.

Dr Wee also questioned whether Lim would live up to his words of providing more funds to TAR UC if MCA really gave up control of it.

"Lim says that if MCA is willing to let go of TAR UC, he will immediately give back the RM30mil this year and another RM30mil next year.

"Does this mean that Lim can decide everything by himself, as I thought the Budget this year does not include that," he said.

Wee, who is the Ayer Hitam MP, added that the DAP secretary-general was using funds meant for the universities for political rivalry.

"TAR UC is not for any politicians, and you would not be helping MCA but the 28,000 students who are studying in the institution.

"Even when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim were Finance Ministers, they never rejected applications for TAR UC," he said.

It was reported that Dr Wee was sad that TAR UC was denied a matching grant for the second year running.

He said MCA had fought for some 50 years to secure matching grants for TAR UC, and had been receiving an average of RM30mil to RM60mil annually under the previous government.

He also lamented the fact that the RM5.5mil allocation for development expenses for TAR UC under the budget last year had been slashed to RM1mil for next year.

What kind of petty-minded person is LGE, please learn to be graceful and magnanimous.

Just make TAR UC a publicly funded institution.

i recall MCA is loaded and have more than rm4 billions assets.
If MCA still want to cling on TAR/UTAR good name, then fork out some money and show that you can be independant of govt financial support.
Just like what the independent Chinese schools n colleges have been doing all these while in the past.

Dear deMusangking,
It is not the question of supporting your foe but a question of supporting a better/affordable choice for our next generation to have a better education when our poor non-bumiputra child is denied a place in our Public University to pursue a degree of their choice.
Thank you
