PETALING JAYA: The Human Resources Ministry is willing to assist the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) settle the issue of possible deregistration, says M. Kulasegaran (pic).

The Human Resources Minister said his ministry was very concerned that the country's biggest federation of trade workers was facing deregistration by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

"We are concerned with the recent reports about the suspension of MTUC, after the RoS opened an investigation paper into complaints of mismanagement against the federation of trade unions.

"The MTUC is said to be representing half a million workers in Malaysia, and this comes as a great concern.

"MTUC, being the main umbrella body for trade unions in Malaysia, has a historical role in safeguarding the rights of workers in Malaysia.

"Any prolonged suspension of MTUC would affect workers who have relied on MTUC's assistance all this while in many ways.

"If MTUC’s leadership is in need of the ministry’s help to reason with RoS or the Home Ministry, our doors are always open," said Kulasegaran in a statement issued on Saturday (Dec 21).

He was referring to the RoS notice asking for an explanation over complaints of mismanagement issued to MTUC on Dec 18, which the union said it had yet to receive.

MTUC said it would continue to operate as usual until it received the letter.

On Dec 20, the RoS announced that it had suspended MTUC, the oldest federation of workers in the country, to investigate complaints of mismanagement.

It also said MTUC has been given 30 days to respond to their queries.

As of press time, MTUC secretary-general J. Solomon said that MTUC had yet to receive any such letter.
