KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the public have lauded the government’s move to introduce the e-Tunai Rakyat scheme, saying that it encourages cashless payments for easier and faster transactions.

Khairunnisa Ismail, 25, said the scheme was progressive and timely, with the advent of mobile and digital technologies.

“It helps those who are constantly on the go and they do not have to look for the nearest ATM (automated teller machine) to withdraw money.

“They can just tap their card or scan their phone.

“It’s definitely a good move, and everyone should support it,” she said, recalling the time when she was given cashback of close to 50 per cent through the Touch ’n Go e-Wallet application.

“The money stays in the app. When I want to top up my Touch ’n Go card, I can do so with the e-Wallet application.

“It’s like a money-rolling system for me.”

Public relations graduate Nienie Leong, 25, said the initiative was a win-win for users.

“It not only helps consumers to save via rebates and discounts, but also benefits businesses, especially those that operate online, such as Boost and Grab.

“They can gain more visibility through this scheme.”

Leong hoped the initiative would progress steadily following its launch yesterday.

“If it goes according to plan, I foresee it helping to transform the nation into a cashless society.

“A number of government entities, such as the Immigration Department, are going cashless.

“This will help accelerate the cashless payment system in the country.

“I hope that the government will help the older generation to embrace this new mode of payment.”

Mohd Rasyidan Ahmad, a small business owner from Kedah, felt that the scheme leveraged the growth of mobile technology and gadgets these days.

“Seeing how everything is bound to technology, I think the government has chosen the right time to introduce this scheme.

“It will encourage people to spend more, knowing that they will get some amount back.”

Don't be fooled by this E-Wallet technology. While it may enable easy payment and receiving money it also can enable the authorities to deduct from the E-WALLET any sum owed due to penalities or summons. The authorities can arm twist the E-Wallet operators to do such deductions citing LAWS.
