KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition members of parliament have called on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his Perikatan Nasional government to heed the call made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today.

They said since the King had said no to Muhyiddin's suggestion on the implementation of the emergency rule and also for a political ceasefire, it was time the government listens to the Agong.

DAP's Klang MP Charles Santiago said the King's statement showed that he and the other sultans shared the same wishes as the people.

"Now it looks like the Agong and the other sultans too are not convinced with Muhyiddin's reasoning (for an emergency to be declared).

"I am sure they (the sultans) have been reading what the people are saying on social media platforms and understand what the people want," he said when contacted.

During an audience with the monarch on Friday, Muhyiddin had proposed for the emergency rule to be imposed, saying it was to curb the spread of Covid-19, but the King said today that he saw no reason why that should be the case.

Al-Sultan Abdullah said since the government has managed to handle the pandemic successfully so far, there was no reason to impose the emergency rule.

Parti Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia (Muda Malaysia) founder Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman also called on all politicians to start working together during the pandemic instead of the endless politicking.

"I hope the prime minister will call up all political leaders to find a common ground to ensure the country's stability," he said when contacted by Berita Harian.
