KUALA LUMPUR: Former Kelantan DAP pro-tem chairman and party lifetime member Datuk Zaid Ibrahim today called for his old party, Umno, to be saved and come out victorious in the 15th General Election.
In his speech today, in conjunction with Umno's special briefing at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Zaid said there was a calculated move by certain quarters to destroy Umno.
He said the recent Federal Court judgement sending former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to prison was a "bizarre" legal process.
"If the son of (second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak can't get justice, how can 'marhaen' (ordinary people) like us get justice?
"I want Umno members to understand that the issue is that the flaws in our laws are too serious.
"This is the time for us to return to the rakyat, win this general election, change all these cruel laws and give everyone the right to be represented.
"These are the promises Umno must make in the general election," he said.
Zaid, who was law minister under Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's premiership, also questioned Putrajaya's decision to allow leeway in certain court cases, but not Najib's.
He said the current government should not practise double-standard treatments and be hypocrites.
"If Putrajaya can show mercy to Nicky Liow and gang, can't a former prime minister get a two-month postponement?
"(Tan Sri) Vincent Tan's son's sentencing was reduced for a drug case. Don't practice double standards. Don't be hypocrites.
"You said you won't meddle in court affairs, but these cases I mentioned are clear."
Therefore, Zaid, who had also previously had a stint in PKR and Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air, said Umno must ensure its victory in GE15.
"If Umno loses again, it will become a graveyard. As long as we live, we must defend Umno.
"For as long as we continue the lifeline of the current government, the flaws will remain."
