SEREMBAN: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu has echoed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in labelling Pas as 'infidels'.

Mohamad, who was the deputy president of the Islamist party before breaking away to form Amanah, said that Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang himself labelled Umno as infidels.

"Now he is friends with Umno, so that makes him an infidel as well," Mohamad, who is also more commonly referred to as Mat Sabu, said during a press conference after opening the 2022 Amanah Convention here, today.

The Kota Raja member of parliament said that Pas members also needed to be labelled as 'infidels' for agreeing to work with Umno.  

"I feel sorry for the Pas president because he always changes his mind every week and we will never know what he will say next week.

"Actually, I prefer not to comment because I think he has an internal problem, an issue with his thinking," he said, after throwing his weight behind Dr Mahathir who is also the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman.

Also present were Amanah's deputy president Datuk Seri Sallehuddin Ayub and communications director Khalid Abdul Samad.

Dr Mahathir had said Pas had become an infidel party because it chose to join hands with Umno, a party that their leader once claimed he distrusted.

Dr Mahathir was referring to 'Amanat Haji Hadi' in 1981 in which the latter reportedly declared Umno as an infidel party that sowed division among the Malays.

However, in 2019, Pas cooperated with its traditional enemy in the spirit of 'ummah unity' (Muslim brotherhood) through the Muafakat Nasional pact.

Meanwhile, Khalid said Abdul Hadi's statement seemed to portray Pas as the only righteous party.

"Everyone is un-Islamic, immoral, they (Pas) are the only ones who are good. But from the point of view of what we see in practice, it is far from what is said.

"So, we are not surprised by these kinds of statements, because they are seen as desperate, when they realise that they have nothing but religious issues to manipulate and use for political capital and mileage," he said.
