PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has returned the meeting allowances as chairman of Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

He said he did not know that he, as chairman of the sovereign wealth fund, would receive allowances for chairing meetings

"I did not know that the Khazanah chairmen, the prime ministers before this, received allowances.

"After several months, I saw that I received money in the bank for meeting allowances.

"I told them I did not want this and I gave the money back," he said in his speech at the Maju Institute of Educational Development cheque presentation ceremony here, today.

He said as prime minister, he had stated that he would not draw a salary as long as the economy and the fate of the people did not improve.

"That is my stand," he added.

Anwar previously had said he would not receive any salary, both as prime minister and as finance minister.

Before taking office, Anwar had said his decision not to take a salary was a show of solidarity with the people who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

He had said he would be ashamed drawing a salary while the people were struggling with rising prices and their salary remained the same.
