THE state polls will be held in the six states-Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, on July 29 or August 5, said a source.

The source added that officials in the Selangor state government are urging the voters to go and vote in droves.

They are going to campaign on the basis that no votes should be wasted, and people who are making plans for holidays should skip the dates between July 29 and Aug 5.

The six states did not dissolve the state assemblies last year ahead of the general elections.

These will be the most hotly contested state polls in the annals of the country. The Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalitions, as well as the Perikatan Nasional-PAS are betting high to win the stakes.

PAS in particular is hunting the PH down in the three states - Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan in an attempt to score historic wins in urban areas.

Nevertheless, PH now has the support of the BN and UMNO which may add votes to their support base. This may give them the edge in the three states and raise their stakes in the PAS-held states of Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. - June 3, 2023
