KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines Bhd has introduced a voluntary carbon offset programme, allowing customers to offset the carbon emissions from their flights by supporting verified offsetting projects when booking on the airline's website.

In collaboration with CHOOSE, a climate tech company from Norway, the programme signifies an important step for parent Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) in its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined in the MAG Sustainability Blueprint.

MAG group chief sustainability officer Philip See said the company is accelerating its role in industry-wide efforts to decarbonise the aviation industry.

"With the launch of the Carbon Offset Programme, Malaysia Airlines customers are provided with transparency to actively mitigate their carbon footprint and contribute to a greener future, as we collectively take significant steps toward our commitment of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and ensure a Sustainable Tomorrow for all," See said in a statement.

The programme offers customers the ability to see and offset the carbon emissions from their flights while booking, supporting internationally certified carbon projects in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

According to Malaysia Airlines, consumers will be able to acquire a greater understanding of the carbon effect of their journey, empowering them to make more sustainable travel choices that correspond with their environmental beliefs.

The certified climate projects chosen by MAG in collaboration with industry experts cover a wide range of efforts carried out across Asean.

Furthermore, the financed programmes conserve and restore peatland ecosystems, minimise deforestation and degradation, and provide capacity building and income generating to marginalised people, among other benefits.
