UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party will continue to support the Unity Government in its efforts to maintain stability in the country, adding that this was a decision made during yesterday’s (March 22) Supreme Working Council Meeting (MKT).

“We have reached several decisions in the Supreme Working Council Meeting (MKT), among which, God willing, we will continue to persevere and support the unity government.

“We want the country’s political stability to be maintained and God willing… in many by-elections (PRN) we have shown unity among the component parties of Barisan Nasional (BN) or friends of BN and the unity government,” he said at the UMNO Breaking the Fast Ceremony.

His message came as an assurance that the government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is still in command of the country, with the support of UMNO despite the stockings with Allah’s word printed on them, creating a wave of discontent among the various parties in the unity government.

A verbal clash erupted between UMNO Youth leader Dr Akmal Salleh and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming escalating tensions last week.

Meanwhile, Zahid pointed out that his party will give way to friends in the unity government to contest in the Kuala Kubu Bharu state legislative assembly (DUN) due to a vacancy in the area.

“We know that the Kuala Kubu Bharu DUN is vacant due to the death of its assemblyman and we feel that even though the number of Malay voters there has increased, in order to respect the unity government I feel that my friends in UMNO/BN should respect the seat of the unity government party.

“Whoever the candidate is announced, BN will come down to help and even though the date has not been announced.. and hopefully we can continue to build this relationship so that the Madani government continues to be strong,” he added.
