KUALA LUMPUR: Umno strongly supports the decree by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, urging all to maintain national harmony and to not touch on sensitive issues regarding race, religion and royalty (3R), says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

“Umno also fully supports His Majesty’s decree in wanting the strongest action taken on any party involved in the belittling of the word Allah,” said the Umno secretary-general.

In a statement after the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday, he said the party will not compromise on matters relating to the sanctity of Islam and urged all to learn from what had happened following the socks issue so it won’t happen again.

Asyraf also said the Umno supreme council fully supports the stance taken by Umno Youth and its chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the matter.

“What was said by the Umno Youth chief had been discussed in the supreme council meeting and we strongly support his stance,” he said.

Asyraf also said the party noted that recent issues such as the Mentega Terbang film, the proposal to nominate Chinese new villages in Selangor as Unesco World Heritage Sites and the current socks issue have become “harmful polemics”.

On March 16, KK Super Mart apologised over the convenience store chain’s mistake in selling socks inscribed with the word “Allah”.

On March 19, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke called on all politicians to build bridges instead of escalating situations when sensitive issues arise.

The Seremban MP also said DAP disagreed with Akmal’s approach as KK Super Mart had apologised and acknowledged its mistake.

In response, Akmal said he would continue his stand to urge the public to boycott KK Super Mart for allowing such socks to be sold.
