CYBERJAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has called for a meeting of 5G dual network implementation task force within a week, to discuss the dual network model.

"There is going to be some discussions. I have asked the task force on 5G to be convened. We will be having a discussion with the Finance Ministry and the Digital Ministry. We expect to have it within the next one week," he told reporters.

The 5G task force was established on May 9, 2023, with the objective to ensure the smooth transition from single wholesale network to a dual network.

The dual network was to be rolled out after the first network achieves its target of 80 per cent roll out.

This was achieved in December 2023.

"Our national target had been to reach 80 per cent and anything beyond that is a plus. So for 80 per cent, that was set up in the contractual arrangement. That was the target," Fahmi told reporters here today when asked on the minimal coverage increment of 0.1 per cent from January to February.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier said in his speech at the  grand opening of Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (CCoE), that the 5G rollout in Malaysia has reached 80.3 per cent coverage as at February in populated areas while internet coverage has reached 97.07 per cent.

The country's 5G coverage in populated areas was at 80.2 per cent as of Jan 1, slightly exceeding the target set by the Prime Minister during the revised 2023 Budget in Feb 24 last year.
