KUALA LUMPUR: The government has provided an update on five cases involving police misconduct that have gained public attention in recent months.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said three of the cases are still being investigated, while two of them have been referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

He said that in the case of police officers who refused to accept a man's report in Kuala Lumpur, a disciplinary investigation paper has been opened and is being investigated by the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters.

On Jan 16, a news portal reported that a police station had refused to accept a man's report after the latter was extorted by four police officers.

The portal reported that the man, who is a car salesman, was extorted for RM10,000 as he was accused of being a loan shark for possessing a lit of identification cards (IC) in his phone.

Meanwhile, on the case of extortion at a Kepong, Kuala Lumpur apartment complex involving four policemen, the case has been referred to the AGC.

He said the case was investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code and has been referred to the AGC.

On the case of two traffic policemen soliciting RM100 from tourists who came from the United Kingdom, the Perak prosecution director has instructed the investigating officer to conduct further investigation.

"Both suspects have been suspended from work since Feb 5," he said.

At the same time, the police have also referred the case of a police station chief who had assaulted a member of the public to the AGC.

"The case was investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 330 of the Penal Code," he said.

Lastly, Saifuddin said police have opened an investigation paper and a disciplinary investigation paper on the case of policemen being found with more than RM3,000 in cash on them during a roadblock in Petaling Jaya.

Saifuddin was responding to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) in a written parliamentary reply dated Thursday.
