PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has condemned the petrol bomb attack at a KK Super Mart outlet in Perak.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (March 27), Dr Muhamad Akmal described the attack as "overboard," while also condemning the death threat he claimed to have received.

"Despite receiving a death threat, my stance remains the same. We will not budge from the boycott campaign. This serves as a stern lesson so no one downplays Islam," he said.

He also thanked the police and authorities for pressing charges against those allegedly involved in the socks controversy.

"We respect the legal process," he said, adding that the matter should be left to the police.

Dr Muhamad Akmal called for a boycott of the retail chain’s stores after socks bearing the word "Allah" were found to be sold at several of its outlets.

The KK Super Mart management and vendor have since issued a public apology for the mistake.

KK Mart Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan and his wife, as the company’s director, were charged on Tuesday (March 26) under Section 298 of the Penal Code for intentionally wounding the religious sensitivities of Muslims by allegedly putting the socks on sale.

Also charged was Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd – the Batu Pahat-based company that supplied the socks to KK Super Mart – as well as its directors Soh Chin Huat, Goh Li Huay and Soh Hui San.

They were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 298 of the same Code, for allegedly abetting the said offence by supplying KK Super Mart with the socks.

At 5.35am Tuesday, a Molotov cocktail was hurled at the outlet in Bidor but did not ignite.

Police said they had obtained CCTV footage of the incident and were tracking down the suspect.

It was also reported late Tuesday that a 68-year-old mechanic had been arrested in Melaka over an alleged death threat against Dr Muhamad Akmal.
