THE Health Ministry is working towards restoring Selayang Hospital’s flagship electronic medical records system (EMR) and is aiming to make it an example of digitalised health records to be implemented at hospitals, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

He said the Cerner system was once deemed the “Rolls Royce” of EMR, but the system was no longer functioning.

“We will prove our capability in implementing an end-to-end EMR system, and we can do it again at the Selayang Hospital,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time yesterday.

The country’s first paperless hospital system has since deteriorated, forcing the hospital to switch to a manual system.

Dzulkefly said while installing the EMR system nationwide might require a huge amount, it would not cost billions of ringgit.

To illustrate his point, the minister said the EMR implemented in 50 health clinics on a small scale cost around RM19,300 a month on a subscription basis.

Dzulkefly said the ministry was also taking several approaches, including leveraging the latest technology to drive the EMR initiative.
