PETALING JAYA: A total of 60.65 tonnes of food and drinks collected from 139 Ramadan bazaars nationwide worth RM724,770 were saved in the MySaveFood@Ramadan 2024 programme.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Deputy Minister Senator Fuziah Salleh(pic) said with this, the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of 113,763kg have also been prevented.

In collaboration with the ministry and Pertubuhan Gema Malaysia (Pemuda Gema), this year around 2,112 volunteers along Gerakan Pengguna Siswa (GPS) were also involved.

"The involvement of (GPS) with a total of 323 volunteers has managed to save 14.52 tonnes of food and drinks in 27 Ramadan bazaars,” added Fuziah in the statement released on Tuesday (April 9).

“Aiming to reduce global food waste per capita by half by 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) align with the endeavour to limit greenhouse gas emissions through this programme.”

Fuziah said the involvement of more volunteers and GPS from higher education institutions this year shows a positive development.

All the saved and collected food and drink from the Ramadan bazaars in MySaveFood@Ramadan 2024 will be given to students, welfare homes, the homeless and those in need.

This year’s programme is a success, where only 25 tonnes of food and drinks worth RM300,000 were collected at 55 bazaars last year, according to Fuziah.

“The ministry would like to thank all the volunteers involved and will continue to support this effort and hopes that it will be culture practised on a larger scale in this future,” said Fuziah.
