KUALA LUMPUR: Some parents are allowing their children to ride motorcycles without proper gear just to save on costs or due to a lack of road safety awareness.

In response, the Road Transport Department (RTD) has announced the implementation of its Special Helmet Operations targeting locations based on information gathered from public complaints.

RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan said the operations involved over 100 officers and personnel to address the issue.

A total of 1,410 motorcycles were inspected in an operation in Puchong Perdana, Selangor.

Out of this number, 92 motorcycles were seized, with the most prevalent offence being riding without a licence. A total of 230 summonses were issued.

While acknowledging the economic motivations behind some parents' preference for motorcycles over cars, Lokman stressed that safety must still be prioritised above all else.

He urged parents to take responsibility and source for helmets that meet Sirim safety standards. He also urged parents to recognise the inherent risks associated with motorcycle riding.

Lokman cautioned those who allowed their children to drive or operate a vehicle without valid licences.

A survey conducted by Harian Metro found that parents continue to flout regulations and that they gave various excuses when confronted by law enforcement personnel.

Such cases still happen despite the alarming statistics of motorcycle-related fatalities.

The prevalence of such issues is most evident during the evening rush hour when parents pick up their children from school.

The most common justifications given by parents included the "riding in the park" or "just going nearby" excuses. They also cited the expenses involved in buying children's helmets.

Some allow the wellbeing of their children to be at risk to save a mere RM60 to RM90 on purchasing helmets.
