PETALING JAYA: A total of 60.65 tonnes of unsold food and drinks were collected from 139 Ramadan bazaars during the MySaveFood @ Ramadan 2024 programme.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh (pic) said the programme saw a total collection worth RM724,770 during a 26-day period.

She said with the initiative, 113,763kg of greenhouse gas emissions had been prevented.

The initiative was a collaboration between the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and Pertubuhan Gema Malaysia. It also involved 2,112 volunteers, including from Gerakan Pengguna Siswa.

“Aiming at reducing global food waste per capita by half by 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals align with the endeavour to limit greenhouse gas emissions through this programme.

“KPDN would like to thank all the volunteers involved and will continue to support this effort, hoping that such a culture will be practised on a larger scale in the future,” she said in a statement yesterday.

The MySaveFood @ Ramadan 2024 programme promoted a comprehensive plan to reduce food loss through efforts to collect unsold food at Ramadan bazaars, which were distributed to students, welfare homes, homeless individuals and those in need.Last year, 25 tonnes of food and drinks worth RM300,000 were collected from 55 bazaars.
