BUTTERWORTH: At least 10 houses in the Bertam and Penaga state constituencies here were affected by yesterday's heavy rain, strong winds and a freak storm.

Two houses in Kampung Permatang Pak Maras in the Bertam constituency were partly damaged.

Also damaged were eight houses in the Penaga state constituency in Kampung Permatang Tok Labu, Kampung Permatang Tok Brain, Kampung Sungai Kedak, Kampung Kancut, Taman Penaga, Kampung Padang and Kampung Kota Aur.

Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries.

Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, in a Facebook posting this morning, said he and Ustaz Mohd Naim Salleh, the coordinator for the Penaga state constituency, would liaise with the relevant agencies for assistance to the affected houses

"While Muslims were celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri yesterday, the roofs of several houses here were blown away and damaged in a storm.

"Ustaz Mohd Naim immediately visited the affected houses in the Penaga and lodged a report with the relevant agencies.

"After Maghrib, Ustaz Mohd Naim and I visited the affected houses in Kampung Permatang Pak Maras and Kampung Permatang Tok Labu.

"Indeed, it was a big test for them this Syawal," he said.

Reezal said he handed over initial aid to the affected victims last night itself.

He also thanked the penghulu and the Seberang Prai Utara district and land office for immediately going to the ground yesterday.

It was reported that heavy rain, strong winds and a freak storm yesterday afternoon caused several trees to be uprooted on Penang island.

The Penang Island City Council said they received 13 such complaints in the northeast and southwest districts.

The complaints were in Jalan Brown, Lebuh Union, Kampung Rawa (off Jalan Patani), Halaman York, Jalan Thomas (Bukit Dumbar), Tingkat Batu Uban 3, Mutiara Perdana, Hilir Pemancar, Lorong Erskine, Sungai Dua, Pesara Mahsuri, Medan Fetter and Batu Feringghi.
