KUALA LUMPUR: The price of vegetables in the market have not experienced any significant increase with most of them being cheaper now than before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

A worker at a grocery store selling vegetables near Chow Kit Market who only wanted to be known as Aiman, 28, confirmed that the prices vegetable were cheaper now.

He said long beans were being sold at RM8 per kilogramme (kg) compared to before Raya which reached RM12 to RM15 per kg.

"In addition, kangkung and spinach are being sold at RM3 per kg, red chillies (RM6 per kg) while cabbage is being sold at RM2.50 per kg.

"It is expected that stock of vegetables such as sweet potato leaves, ferns and other vegetables will be sent to wholesale markets around the capital this coming Tuesday," he said, adding that the supply of vegetables he sells was obtained from wholesalers in the Selayang market.

A visit to the Chow Kit Market found that most vegetable stalls were still closed.

He said most of the vegetable traders have been on holiday since Tuesday and some stalls will only reopen tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Federation of Vegetable Farmers Association president, Lim Ser Kwee, said the price of vegetables so far has not experienced any significant increase despite the school holidays and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

"So far the prices have not gone up because Hari Raya isn't over yet. Maybe the price will go up in another week. After school opens, it's possible that the price will go up significantly," he said.

When asked about the claims of some parties about excess vegetables being thrown away, Lim said this situation occured in some places where a lot of vegetables are not sold, resulting in them having to be thrown away.
