THE six Bersatu MPs and a state assemblyman who had declared their support for the unity government have been told to vacate their seats.

Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris said the Registrar of Societies (ROS) had already given the nod to the proposed amendments to Bersatu’s constitution concerning the revocation of membership of elected representatives who go against the party’s stand.

“The six MPs and one state assemblyman are urged not to wait for a letter from Bersatu. Instead, if they are anak jantan (gentleman) they should just relinquish their position (as elected representatives) and vacate their seats,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

He said since the ROS had approved Bersatu’s constitutional amendments the seven party rebels have automatically ceased being members of the Perikatan Nasional component.

Razali said Bersatu will be sending the six MPs and assemblyman a letter, along with a notice that the ROS has approved their constitutional amendment.

But he said the elected representatives do not need to wait for a letter to make a decision to vacate their seats and trigger by-elections.

The seven include Tanjung Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim and Selat Klang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.

Previously, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the party will take action against the seven elected representatives after Hari Raya.

On April 5, the former prime minister said the party’s amended constitution effectively closed the loophole for the six lawmakers to remain elected lawmakers despite crossing the political aisle to back Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.

“This is a fasting month and they can celebrate Hari Raya first. We will take necessary action based on the amended party constitution after that,” he said in a video posted in his Facebook page. - April 12, 2024
