KUALA LUMPUR: A DAP member of Parliament has raised questions about Spanco Sdn Bhd's contract to supply, repair, maintain and manage the government's fleet of vehicles amid its chairman's legal woes.

"How can the government ensure the fulfilment of obligations under the contract with Spanco after the company's boss has been accused of cheating the government?", said Lim Lip Eng in a statement.

The Kepong MP also asked for details on the value of the concession and when it would expire.

"Was the award of the contract to Spanco approved by the Cabinet?

"I urge the government to conduct a thorough review of the contract with Spanco amidst the ongoing criminal court proceedings against the company's owner."

Last week, Tycoon Tan Sri Robert Tan pleaded not guilty to a charge of cheating related to a RM3.9 billion government fleet vehicle contract five years ago.

The 83-year-old Spanco Sdn Bhd chairman, was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

According to the charge sheet, Tan is accused of cheating the Finance Ministry's tender committee over Spanco's Bumiputera share ownership, and in doing so, dishonestly induced the ministry to award the company the contract.

Tan, who is the company's executive director, allegedly committed the offence at the ministry's tender room office in Putrajaya between Feb 27 and Feb 28, 2019.
