MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong criticised the statement made by the DAP which said his party has not done anything for the Chinese community apart from the image of not prioritising the interests of the masses but that of the rich.

He said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook’s claims belittle the struggles and contributions of the party since the country’s independence, adding that they are hurtful comments.

“What’s not there? The right to citizenship, and the right to vote which is being enjoyed by DAP is also fought for by MCA, have they forgotten? Since independence, we have been fighting.

“Let’s say MCA did not do anything, but at least he has the right to vote, right? The right to be elected as a representative of the people. Don’t say we didn’t do anything, it is very hurtful,” he said in a social media video.

Wee criticised the DAP for its “Malaysia for Malaysians” slogan, contrasting it with the MCA’s stance on racial equality.

He highlighted the DAP’s contributions to education through Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) but questioned their push to abolish the quota system.

Despite being part of the government, the MCA is seen as acting as a check and balance to ensure harmony, said Wee, a statement that received a lot of backlash on the X platform.

An X user pointed out that DAP has defeated the MCA on several occasions now, proving that the MCA is not relevant. Hence, the MCA leader should not be talking of past deeds.

Instead of acting as a check and balance in the government, some users ask the leader to pull the party out of the unity government instead and join the opposition with its one seat.

Another user added that the party only had two seats won thanks to Malay voters. The user seems to believe the MCA’s future is bleak.

Many others either urged him to join the PAS or asked what is the contribution of the MCA since it joined the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government. They also question his leadership.

None of those commenting said anything positive about the role of the MCA in the recent governments. - April 14, 2024
