JOHOR BARU: Johor has dealt with complaints on sensitive matters “in private” to avoid creating unnecessary uproar, says state Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.

“We have received other similar complaints. We are addressing them, but we are doing so in private as we do not want it to cause an uproar,” he said.

“We have no choice but to do so because we love our state. As the exco handling religious matters, I want to protect the peace among all religions.”

Referring to the seizure of 11 mats with images featuring the Kaabah, Mohd Fared said he hopes for all parties to be calm and to trust the authorities.

The items were removed from a shopping complex in Batu Pahat on the eve of Hari Raya.

Subsequently, both the seller and supplier explained that these were prayer mats which were mistakenly labelled as door mats.

Mohd Fared, when contacted yesterday, said he understands that these business operators did not mean any disrespect but the damage has been done.

“I know they are not doing it on purpose, but it is very disappointing, especially when it happens during Hari Raya.

“I hope that they will be extra careful in the future,” he said.

He urged the public to report such issues to the authorities through proper channels instead of circulating it on social media.

Meanwhile, Johor unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar said Hari Raya open houses are a good reminder of the beauty of living in a multiracial country.

“Malaysia is a unique country. For years, we have been able to maintain peace and unity among people of all races and religions.”

As such, he said he is sad to hear about recent events that touched on religious sensitivity.

“When it comes to living in a multiracial country, the most important thing is for us to respect each other’s religion and abide by the law,” he said when contacted.
