FORMER UMNO Supreme Working Council Meeting member Isham Jalil denied being a Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election, saying he is not interested in the candidature for the May 11 elections.

However, the popular figure who was dumped by UMNO said he would be present during the by-election as an observer. He also added that it is pure slander for some people to suggest that he will be the PN candidate.

“I will go to the Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election later as an observer,” he said through sharing on Facebook today.

In current developments, Pakatan Harapan (PH) announced that the seat will be contested by a candidate from DAP and this could cause some division within the ranks of the unity government as the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) may abstain from campaigning for the DAP candidate.

MCA has stated it will not campaign in the elections if a Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate is not contesting the seat.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties are also having some issues with both Gerakan and Bersatu vetting for their candidates to get a chance to contest. PN has yet to appoint a candidate from the coalition of component parties under it, and the discussion is focusing on having a Malay candidate.

According to Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, PN will field candidates who can win, that is, whoever can boost support and bring victory to the party will represent PN in the by-election.

He also added that the selection of the candidate does not represent any component party but instead represents PN as a whole.

The by-election was held following the death of Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 after several years of battling cancer. - April 20, 2024
