KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul will lead a team of delegates from Parliament on an official visit to the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland from tomorrow until May 2.

The visit aims to deepen Malaysia's understanding of parliamentary governance, foster collaboration, and strengthen relationships between the UK, Irish and Malaysian parliaments.

Accompanying the speaker will be Selayang member of parliament and Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Election and Institutional Reform chairman William Leong, Special Select Committee on Environment, Science and Plantation member Rodiyah Sapiee (Batang Sadong MP) and Special Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transportation and Communications' Khairil Nizam Khirudin (Jerantut MP).

The visit, said the Malaysian Parliament in a statement, reflects Malaysia's commitment to inclusivity and collaboration in parliamentary affairs.

"Throughout the programme, the delegation will engage in a series of discussions, workshops, and meetings designed to enhance knowledge and skills in parliamentary affairs.

"The objective of this visit is to empower the delegation to contribute effectively to the functioning of their respective parliamentary functions," it said.

Among the key objectives are deepening understanding of parliamentary governance, enhanced knowledge of committee structures and processes; sharing of best practices for proceedings, strengthening relationships between parliaments, as well as holding meetings with UK parliament officials.

During the visit, Johari will engage in a series of courtesy calls on Irish President Michael D. Higgins and is expected to deliver a talk entitled "Asean-UK in the Asian Century" to students at Lancaster University, promoting dialogue and exchange between academia and parliamentary representatives, among others.

"This official visit underscores the Parliament of Malaysia's dedication to parliamentary excellence, international cooperation, and the promotion of democratic values.

"By exchanging knowledge and experiences, the delegation will play a crucial role in advancing parliamentary democracy in Malaysia and beyond."
