SUBANG JAYA: The review of existing laws related to the ecommerce is expected to be completed by mid-2025, says Datuk Seri Armizan Mohd Ali.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said the review which started in May this year, was done in collaboration with a team of consultants to update the existing laws or create a new legal framework to monitor the ecommerce sector efficiently.

“We have given the team a timeline of a year to review and conduct engagement sessions with all stakeholders including the business community under ecommerce such as the Shopee platform and others.

“The team are expected to present their findings whether there is a need to create a new law or amend the existing laws.

“So, we are confident that with a more comprehensive legal framework that is suited to current demands and technological developments, we will be able to provide better protection to consumers and simultaneously build confidence. This will encourage more of our community to use this ecommerce platform,” he said when he met with reporters after the closing ceremony of the 2024 Shopee Seller Summit.

Armizan said there are three Acts under the Constitution related to ecommerce which is under the purview of the ministry namely: the Electronic Commerce Act 2006, the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and the Consumer Protection (Electronic Trade Transactions) Regulations 2012.

He added there are other legal frameworks that protect the welfare of the consumers but academicians and legal experts have suggested looking into laws related to ecommerce comprehensively as the sector is robust and fast-evolving.
