FORMER economic affairs minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (also known as Tok Pa) has ruled out any possibility of being fielded by Bersatu in potential by-elections for parliamentary seats in Kelantan, reiterating his decision to retire from politics.

Mustapa, who was also the former international trade and industry minister, clarified that he is no longer a member of Bersatu and had stepped down from all party posts since Sept 30, 2023.

“I would like to repeat the statement I issued on Nov 2, 2022 that I ‘retired’ from politics when I decided to sit out the 15th general election,” he said.

This comes after Kelantan Bersatu indicated its readiness to field Mustapa and make way for former UMNO secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa in anticipation of possible by-elections for the Gua Musang and Jeli parliamentary seats.

Meanwhile, Kelantan Bersatu chief Datuk Kamaruddin Noor emphasised that the decision to field the two senior politicians would need approval from the top Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership.

Tok Pa chose not to defend his Jeli parliamentary seat during the 15th General Election and did not contest his Air Lanas state seat in last year’s state election. He left UMNO and joined Bersatu in 2018.

Moreover, PN is preparing for potential by-elections for six parliamentary seats currently held by Bersatu MPs including Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Tanjong Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi and Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid.

Bersatu contends that these MPs, who declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year, ceased to be members after disobeying party orders.

Furthermore, Tok Pa cited health reasons for not defending his Jeli seat in the 15th General Election.

He first won the Jeli seat in 1995 while with Barisan Nasional and defended it for five terms, except from 1999 to 2004, when he lost to PAS candidate Datuk Seri Apandi Mohamad but reclaimed it in the 14th General Election. – June 28, 2024
