DEFYING police order, Demi Negara - the organiser of Demo Rakyat Lawan Anwar Round 1 - will forge ahead with the street protest scheduled tomorrow (June 29) at the public car park site opposite the Kompleks Seri Perdana in Putrajaya beginning 4pm.

The movement’s spokesman Aidil Yunus a.k.a. YB Viral who expects a meagre turnout of 600 has described the protest as “the first warning letter” after the rakyat has patiently given 18 months to the Madani government to rectify a myriad of policy weaknesses.

Meanwhile, Demi Negara’s lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali said his client does not need any permit from the police to assemble peacefully.

“Under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (Act 736), the organiser only needs to notify the cops about the assembly. This is guaranteed by law. There is a court decision (previously) stating that the police is duty-bound to provide security to the participants,” he told a media conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (June 27).

This comes about after Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa advised the organiser to discontinue the rally which has failed to secure the go-ahead from venue owner, Perbadanan Putrajaya.

Rusdi in a statement has said that having received 85 police reports on the matter, the police have opened investigation papers under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Recall that Aidil along with fellow Demi Negara members Siti Zulaikha Olivia (socio-politic activist and observer) and Dayangku Intan (popular 1980s artist and celebrity) were present at the IPD Dang Wangi on June 22 to have their statements recorded with regard to the planning of the Demo Rakyat Lawan Anwar Round 1 protest.

So, what can the commoners expect from the so-called “rakyat for rakyat” rally? Below are the eight objectives earmarked by Aidil:

# 1 - The Madani government should lower the price of diesel oil and not increase the price of RON95 oil.

#2 - The government needs to restore the local rice supply without price increase and address the plight of rice farmers.

#3 - The government must take immediate action to overcome the issue of urban poverty stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing impacted contributors to withdraw their Employees Provident Fund’s (EPF) savings.

#4 - The government must promptly deal with rises in the cost of living by being transparently while abstaining from manipulating economic data.

#5 - The government needs to defend the plight of public healthcare workers by upgrading infrastructure and service quality, and cancelling the implementation of the Health White Paper which intends to privatise public health services.

#6 - The government must be fair to opposition MPs by providing them with sufficient financial allocation so that they can perform their duties effectively through implementation of equal and fair financial allocation laws.

#7 - The government must stop silencing the people from expressing opposing views/levelling criticism at the government.

#8 - The government must discard all policies related to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which oppress the people and eventually loot assets belonging to the country. - June 28, 2024
