KUALA LUMPUR: The person who sent a fake bomb parcel to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) earlier this month did so using someone else’s identity, police revealed.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the suspect had hired the services of a courier firm for the purpose.

“Initial investigations revealed that the sender used someone else’s identity to do so. The person, whose identity was used, was unaware of the parcel.

“We are in the midst of identifying the suspect,” he told a press conference at the Brickfields police headquarters yesterday.

Comm Rusdi said police have obtained CCTV footages of the suspect sending the parcel to the courier company on June 5.

“We have the footage and photos of the suspect but the person was wearing a face mask, black jacket and black head cover.

“We urge those with information to contact the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or the nearest police station,” he said.

It was reported that police recorded statements from several persons including Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in connection with the bomb hoax at the ministry.

The suspicious package that was sent to the Motac headquarters was confirmed to be a fake “bomb”.

“The item was made with a PVC pipe and even had a timer.

“It was a fake (bomb) but it resembled a real one,” said Comm Rusdi.

The package was brought to the 14th floor of Motac at 2.45pm.

The bomb squad was then called in.
