KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) urges the Education Ministry to tighten its oversight of donations received by schools to avoid a recurrence of the controvery over a beer company's donation recently.

MBM condemned a school in Sepang for accepting funds from an alcohol beverage company.

"It clearly contravenes the guidelines in Circular Letter Number 3 of 2018 issued by the Education Ministry, which prohibits any contributions that are proceeds from gambling, tobacco, drugs and alcoholic beverages.

"MBM's view aligns with the Education Ministry in emphasising that all educational institutions under the ministry must adhere to the guidelines for organising programmes and accepting donations, to ensure they do not conflict with the values and principles.

"Accepting funds from this alcoholic beverage company is seen as creating a negative perception and tarnishing the school's image and integrity as a place for character building and morals of the younger generation," it said.

MBM said education should be protected from influences that could compromise children's morals and ethics.

It also proposed that the ministry tighten control on external funding received by schools.
