KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): The prosecution is unlikely to decide in the coming months on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's request to drop the charges in the RM27 million SRC International Sdn Bhd trial.

Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul informed the court on Wednesday that the status of the 51-page letter of representation Najib sent a year ago remained unchanged as no decision has been made. The imprisoned former PM had sought to drop all three money-laundering charges against him in the trial.

"There is no decision on the letter of representation. [I] don't foresee any decision in the next few months," the DPP said of the letter.

However, Mohd Ashrof said that he will inform the parties should there be any change in the situation.

The trial dates for the case have also been pushed to 2025 per the defence's request.

During a brief mention before High Court judge K Muniandy on Wednesday, lead defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah asked for the September dates to be vacated as his team was preoccupied with other Najib-related cases.

Some of the other cases include submissions at the end of prosecution's case for the 1Malaysia Development Bhd-Tanore (1MDB-Tanore) trial, which is slated for Aug 19-22. There is also the continuation of the SRC civil case in August.

The new trial dates are now set for April 21-25 and May 19-23, 2025.

In this trial, Najib is charged with three counts of money laundering by accepting proceeds from illegal activities amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts in July, 2014.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence, after the apex court dismissed his final appeal in the RM42 million SRC case in August 2022.

Najib is also fighting a RM6.6 billion criminal breach of trust case involving International Petroleum Investment Co, where he is charged alongside former Treasury secretary general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah. That trial is set to start in November.
