KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Johor, Selangor and Penang led Malaysia’s exports, accounting for 70.6% of the total in July 2024, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said exports rose by RM14.4 billion, or 12.3%, to RM131 billion in July 2024, compared to the same month in the previous year.

Johor was the top exporter with RM5.2 billion, followed by Selangor (+RM2.3 billion), Penang (+RM1.9 billion), Sarawak (+RM1.8 billion) and Kuala Lumpur (+RM1.3 billion).

“The increase in exports was due to higher contributions from other states, including Perak (+RM1.2 billion), Terengganu (+RM1.0 billion), Kedah (+RM457.7 million), Negeri Sembilan (+RM105.2 million), Melaka (+RM63.9 million) and Pahang (+RM59.0 million),” he said in the July 2024 Export Import Statistics by State report by DOSM, published on Wednesday.

Conversely, exports fell in the Federal Terrirory of Labuan by RM1.1 billion, while Sabah’s exports fell by RM150.4 million, followed by Perlis (-RM34.8 million), and Kelantan (-RM26.3 million).

On imports, Mohd Uzir reported an increase of RM25.3 billion, or 25.4% in July 2024, compared to July 2023. This rise was driven by higher imports in most states: Penang (+RM8.4 billion), Johor (+RM5.6 billion), Selangor (+RM5.4 billion), Kedah (+RM2.3 billion), and Kuala Lumpur (+RM1.5 billion).

“Significant increases in imports were also recorded from Melaka (+RM440.6 million), Perak (+RM380.8 million), Sarawak (+RM138.6 million), Kelantan (+RM81.2 million), Negeri Sembilan (+RM64.8 million), Perlis (+RM60.9 million), Terengganu (+RM55.6 million), and Pahang (+RM26.7 million).

“However, imports decreased in Sabah by RM43.7 million, and in Labuan by RM36.8 million,” he added.

Malaysia’s total trade for July 2024 amounted to RM255.9 billion, with exports and imports reaching RM131.1 billion and RM124.7 billion, respectively.
