LANGKAWI: Torrential rain in the early hours of Wednesday (August 28) has led to flooding in several areas across three sub-districts of this resort island.

Langkawi Civil Defence Force (APM) district officer Captain (PA) Khairul Afzan Md Yasin reported that the Padang Matsirat public market, Kampung Limbung Putra, Kampung Atas, Kampung Batu Ara in the Padang Matsirat sub-district were affected by the floods.

He added that Bukit Kemboja, Kampung Nyiur Cabang, Kampung Lubuk Setul in the Bohor sub-district, and Kampung Kerman in the Kuah sub-district are also affected.

"The intense rainfall caused the water levels to rise and overflow at Sungai Melaka, the main river in the Bohor and Padang Matsirat sub-districts," he said on Wednesday (August 28).

Khairul Afzan then added that around 40 villagers were affected after water entered 10 houses in Kampung Limbung Putra.

He added, however, that no temporary flood relief centres (PPS) were opened during this incident.

Khairul Afzan said that the heavy rainfall commenced around midnight on Wednesday, with water levels beginning to rise around 3am, leading to the flooding.

The rainfall subsided at about 7am.

"As of 9.46am, the water levels have been receding gradually, although they have not yet fallen below the alert threshold," he said, adding that APM staff will continue to watch over the areas struck by flooding.
