THE Youth and Sports Ministry has confirmed that Malaysia will host the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan announced that the decision made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, came after evaluating offers from several states.

Yeoh revealed that multiple states expressed interest in co-hosting the event but only three states-Penang, Sabah, and Sarawak-committed to sharing the costs. The total estimated cost for organising the games is RM700 mil, based on the expenses of the 2017 SEA Games.

“We sent letters to the states who offered to co-host. Only three states responded with commitments to help bear the cost.

Some states are interested, but are not ready to provide allocations.

Sarawak has agreed to cover 50% of the organising cost, amounting to over RM300 mil. Sabah has committed RM100 mil, while Penang will contribute RM15 mil.

The SEA Games Federation’s offer to host the 2027 SEA Games was accepted following this collaborative agreement. - Aug 29, 2024
