KOTA KINABALU: Sabah churches have called on Malaysians to preserve the harmony among the various races and religions as the country ushers in the National Day celebrations on Saturday (Aug 31) and Malaysia Day on Sept 16.

Sabah Council of Churches president Bishop Datuk Melter Jiki Tais said Malaysia has been blessed with a rich tapestry of cultures, religions and ethnicities.

As such, he reminded that these celebrations were a time for reflection on the people’s shared journey as a nation, rooted in unity, diversity and mutual respect.

“Our diversity is not just our strength, it is the essence of our national identity,” he said, in a statement on Friday (Aug 30).

“As we commemorate these milestones, we are reminded of the importance of upholding the principles of harmony and inclusiveness that have guided us through decades of progress and development.

“The Sabah Council of Churches wishes to emphasise the vital role that religious communities play in fostering peace and understanding within our society,” Tais added.

In a world where differences can often lead to division, he said, it was the collective responsibility of the people to ensure that these differences are celebrated as the foundation of a peaceful and united Malaysia.

On this auspicious occasion, he said the council also honoured the courage, dedication, and resilience of the nation’s forefathers, who laid the groundwork for Malaysia, which people have come to know today.

“Their vision of a united nation, where all citizens are treated with dignity and respect, remains our guiding light as we navigate the challenges of the present and the future of our nation-building,” he said.

Tais said the Sabah Council of Churches also reaffirms its commitment to working alongside all Malaysians to build a nation where every individual, regardless of race, religion or background can thrive and contribute to the common good.

“It is our prayer that all Malaysians continue to nurture the bonds of friendship and solidarity that bind us together, ensuring that Malaysia remains a beacon of unity in diversity

“This year, as we celebrate Malaysia’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day, let us renew our pledge to uphold the values of peace, justice and unity.

“May our beloved nation continue to prosper, and may we always stand together, united in our diversity,” he said.
