JOHOR BARU: Malaysia Day celebrations in Johor Baru were sweetened with a record-setting 24-metre-long cake.

Decorated with fresh grapes, the confectionery masterpiece involved the collaborative efforts of 50 participants and secured a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Tourism Johor Director Sharil Nizam Abdul Rahim said that the cake spanned 24 metres in length, 1.2 metres in width, and stood 10 centimetres tall, earning the title of the longest grape cake.

"The cake represents unity and collaboration, requiring the shared endeavour of chefs, volunteers, and various organisations to achieve this feat," he said during the unveiling at a mall in Taman Sutera Utama on Monday (September 16) night.

Following the record recognition, the cake was sliced and shared with the public, including donations to those less fortunate.

Sharil added that he hopes that the event would raise awareness of the needs of others and the positive impact of communal support.

Grapes were chosen for their symbolic association with prosperity and festivity, deemed suitable for Malaysia Day festivities.

Organised by a local culinary academy, the event attracted a sizeable queue of shoppers eager to take a piece of the record-breaking dessert home.

The cake was carefully divided and boxed, ready for the shoppers to enjoy with their families and friends.

Malaysia Book of Records official Mohd Nazrul Hafizi Ahmad Fauzi presented the official certificate to the academy's executive chef Michael Ooi.

Ooi then added that the cake required approximately 20 hours to bake and assemble.
