KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 17): In the effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), concrete measures must be implemented in every area, including parliamentary constituencies, said Social and Economic Research Initiative (Seri) chairman Nurul Izzah Anwar.

She emphasised that uncontrolled development and extreme climate changes require serious attention.

“When development occurs without proper climate adaptation mechanisms, it can lead to floods that devastate property, affecting all states.

“Communities need to be reminded that every development should be accompanied by climate adaptation measures, so that when it rains, the water does not get blocked and eventually flow into our homes,” she told reporters at the SDG Summit 2024 here on Tuesday.

On the goals, Nurul Izzah said that the first one is to eradicate poverty.

She noted the importance of understanding the challenges faced by communities in various locations, such as those in public housing programmes (PPR), which face different challenges compared to rural areas, including Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia.

“Therefore, by using contemporary methods to measure specific needs, we can better address the people’s requirements in terms of access to education.

“Currently, children may show less interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). However, by studying STEM, it is hoped that they will be able to pursue careers that can lift them out of the cycle of poverty,” she added.
