ALOR SETAR: The Bukit Pinang water treatment plant phase 1 was forced to cease operations early Thursday (Sept 19) after the water level at its intake reached a critical stage due to continuous rain over the past few days.

In a statement, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) said the suspension of operations at the plant at 1am resulted in unscheduled water supply disruption in the Kota Setar district and parts of the Kubang Pasu district, affecting approximately 35,000 consumer accounts.

The affected areas include Pekan Alor Setar, Mergong, Mentaloon, Hutan Kampung, Tanjung Musang, Bukit Pinang, Kepala Batas and Tok Jalai.

According to Sada, it is currently unable to determine when the plant will resume operations as the water level remains at a critical stage and has inundated the plant's mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

"In addition to floods, several other water treatment plants are also at risk due to damage to Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) electrical systems, caused by the storm and fallen trees," the statement said.

Sada said to ease the burden on consumers, it has taken immediate measures by dispatching water tankers and placing static tankers at relief centres.

"Information regarding this water supply disruption will be updated from time to time through social media platforms and Sada's official website at www.sada.com.my or the public can contact i-Sada at 130088 0017," said the company. – Bernama
