Netizens discuss e-hailing screening for problematic drivers

WITH the arrival of several new e-hailing platforms in Malaysia in an attempt to level out the playing field, netizens are now asking for a thorough screening process of drivers on the new platforms.
Some X users appear to be more comfortable with the more established apps instead that have a history of laying off ‘bad’ drivers. An X user shared her concerns about problematic drivers onboarded into new platforms.
According to Statista, Malaysia’s ride-hailing market is projected to reach 11.47 million users by 2029.
User penetration is anticipated to grow from 28.1% in 2024 to 31.5% by 2029. This shows the importance of having security as a main feature for these platforms, as there are a significant number of customers.
However, there are several allegations thrown by X users who claimed that smaller and newer platforms may take in drivers who were rejected by bigger platforms.
While there is no evidence proving this allegation to be true, the users’ concerns could be genuine. Some claimed they have friends who have been harassed by problematic drivers.
Despite this, users urge women to take precautions when using unfamiliar or new e-hailing platforms. Generally, safety should be ensured, as these platforms are likely to have strict safety features similar to those found in larger services.
