FILMMAKER Chong Keat Aun, who made a movie on the aftermath of the May 13 riots, was thrilled that a burial site in Selangor comprising mostly victims of the tragedy is finally being recognised by the state government, reported China Press.

Thanks to four years of lobbying by Persatuan Sahabat Warisan Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor, the Selangor government gazetted the site as a non-Muslim cemetery.

Those who feared that the site would be turned into a car park were finally put at ease following the state government’s decision.

Chong, who filmed his movie Snow in Midsummer at the site, had earlier raised RM80,000 for the site’s upkeep.

“The site has stood for 55 years as an unnamed cemetery related to the May 13 racial riots.

“The Selangor government has finally announced that it has been gazetted as a non-Muslim cemetery under Section 62 of the National Land Code,” he said.

He thanked the state government for the decision to preserve the site.

It was reported that the cemetery, located behind Masjid Jamek Ibnu Sina near Sungai Buloh Hospital, had 102 headstones.

Chong won Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards for his first feature film titled Story of Southern Islet in 2020. His second film Snow in Midsummer successfully passed the scrutiny of the Film Censorship Board and was shown in local cinemas beginning July this year.

Footage of the incident at Stadium Bukit Jalil showed two women punching and slapping each other below stage while other fans tried to pull them apart.

According to the person who uploaded the video, the fight erupted during a segment when the Chinese singer was shaking hands with fans.

She believed that the altercation resulted from the two fans bumping into each other in their haste to get to the front.

Security personnel had to intervene to stop the fight.
