Mr Soon is a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and a member of Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Mr Soon started his professional career with KPMG Peat Marwick (now known as KPMG) from 1981 to 1988 during which he acquired his professional qualification. He joined Hong Leong Group of Companies in 1988 and became the Group Financial Controller of Malaysian Pacific Industries Berhad in 1993. Shortly thereafter in 1994, he was promoted to become the Group Financial Controller of Hong Leong Industries Berhad ["HLI"] Group of Companies. From 2001 to 2005, he was the Group Financial Controller of both HLI and Hume Industries Berhad. In December 2005, Mr Soon joined Hap Seng Consolidated Berhad ["HSCB"] and is currently its Group Finance Director. He was appointed as an Executive Director of Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Berhad ["HSP"] on 15 May 2007. He was also appointed as an Executive Director of HSCB on 1 February 2007, the immediate holding company of HSP. On 1 April 2009, he became the Alternate Director in Malaysian Mosaics Berhad.
