Kenanga Growth is under Small Cap and AMB Dividend is under Malaysia Dividend category. CIMB Asia PAC is under Asia x Japan Category. This comparison is made for Malaysia large cap category in order to make an apple to apple comparison between UT and ETF.

Secondly, I never claim to be a good stock picker. So on what basis are you calling me to be bad?

Hi inwest88, rule of 72 is used to calculate the number of years needed to double up your money based on a fixed rate of return. If we are trying to calculate the projected amount after 30 years for example, I don't think Rule of 72 can be used. Cheers

What I am sharing has got nothing to do with salesmanship. it is enterily up to the investor to decided if a fund is worth his or her time to consult with me or not. if i were to do pure sales, i would have just showed one excelent fund and need not spend so much time writing an entire review.

kcchongz, I do not monitor all the funds performance, only selected funds. All public mutual funds are not in my list as they are overated.

In total there are 600 over unit trust funds available investing in variety of area from Malaysia to Asia Pac to China and World.

The top 10 equity Malaysia funds average (annualized) about 10-16% over a five year period. When I refer to annualized it means that it could be 20% for 1 year and -10% the following year. It follows the overall market sentiment (bearish or bullish). The difference is how good the fund manager manages the investment in terms of stocks picking and exiting at the right time.

The top 10 funds in Equity Malaysia category over-performs the KLCI index for 1, 3, 5 or 10 years in terms of capital gain. That I am very sure.

Therefore when investing in Unit Trust, it is wise to do some homework or obtain recommendation from reliable Unit Trust Consultant. Not the 3 suku type whom are into it just for the sales and commission.

benhctan, I think you need to read more about how the unit price is derived daily before accusing that it is quoted by the Manager. If unit trust perform poorer then the index, why is KLCI ETF so unpopular? EVeryone would be rushing to invest over there.

Cheers

Shane

Once again...Unit Trust has been misunderstood and being compared with stocks investing.

Lastly, I need to repeat this phrase
"unit trust was designed in the first place to allow the public a chance to invest without the need to worry about the fundamentals and technicality of stocks"

If you're an experienced stock investor, then it's obvious that you can decide on how you want to invest and grow your money. The decision making is yours and you can exercise more control. However, not everyone has the luxury of time and the emotional control to be successful in stock investing. Hence other options such as unit trust or ASB are available for the public. :)

kcchongnz, It's difficult to give you the details here, typing in simple font. You can find every information you have from my blog. In this post, you can find out what are the best performing unit trust over 10 year period. No need for 3 or 5 years.

For benchmarking, you can take a look at the factsheet Kenanga Growth:

Answering to lotsofmoney

"The problem with Unit Trust is that all the "Agents" are super eager to push you to buy as much as possible to maximise their commission. One actually tell me that he does not care even his client "go to hell"."

This is exactly what is happening...unit trust was designed in the first place to allow the public a chance to invest without the need to worry about the fundamentals and technicality of stocks. Then when more and more agents promote UT, it becomes competitive and you start getting unscrupulous agents trying to make sales purely for the commission.

If you intend to invest in unit trust, make sure you engage a unit trust consultant that is knowledgeable. By asking a few questions and asking how a unit trust works can tell you loads about the level of knowledge and confidence of an agent.

Here's an article that I wrote about why Unit Trust is negatively perceived.

the key to unit trust investing is long term and consistent investment. when you speculate into unit trust and purchase newly launched funds based on hype, thats gonna cost u. as was the case of china funds. investing blindly is akin to gambling. my 2cents.

As for share or REITs, I assume on the average that you can obtain about 10-20% per year returns but the investor is required to put in the hardwork into monitoring and decision making. Emotional stress during a bear market could lead to poor decision making. As for unit trust, the management of funds are left to the fund managers without the need for investors to worry much. The most important aspect in unit trust is of course selecting the right fund. just my 2 cents

That's a misconception. The Initial Charge is a one time fee only after which the following year there will not be charged another 5-6%. Secondly the management fee is deducted on from the day to day Net Asset Value (NAV) of the fund. When shown a 10% return for example, that is the real return of your investment. There is no need for deduction of the management fees anymore. :)

A point to ponder for everyone. Based on the calculation, the actual inflation rate for Malaysia is rather high in comparison to the neighboring countries. There's two possibilities here. One, the calculation is inaccurate. The other, the actual price of consumer products subsidized is not as high as the what the data indicates.

Actually fund managers gain from the management expense ratio of about 1.XX %, for the 5.5% apart of it goes to the unit trust agent selling that fund. That's why some of us have now moved over to online investing platform that charges about 1-2% for each purchase. The same applies for those investing in the bursa, buying in will incur charges and charges apply when selling.
