@tptan45 what have you made so far, from how much capital, over how long? I've yet to make money from individual stocks, due to the problems stated in the article, but have made significant amounts from unit trust.
@beson911 actually UTC supposed to advise when to do that i think. And unit trust people always say don't time the market??? strange.

@tptan45 What do you mean by limited effort. and 50% gain, in a market that went up about 14%? Green hits all the way? wow.
@yfchong Yes, most of the time UTC are misleading...because actually most of them are uneducated and without appropriate financial knowledge to give sound advice.
But if investing like say Rm100-300 a month, calculated fees actually cheaper than stock market. and there's that liquidity thing also.
I I had the cash to invest RM1000-3000 a month, then I would do it directly on the stock market.
Anyways, Dollar Cost averaging that they talk about so much, also works for shares. :)
A tip with you unit trust: buy in a week before the dividend. It will negate some of the effect of the service charge. And ask your UTC for a rebate!

I'm a bit confused for company announcements that say:
"Final dividend announced at 10% per share"
what is the value of the dividend? 10% from par value or what?
an example would be http://klse.i3investor.com/servlets/anpth/284483.jsp
thanks!

I'm feeling great that finally my analysis has a confirming factor...predicted floor at 6.430. hopefully we will have some good news on Maxis.
I'm also on a one stock portfolio.

err...they won't do that...then digi shares will be too expensive for small traders.

Ruslimz, do you have the data for that? That would be good to look at. :)

I am at heart an investor not trader. There's a target profit I want to earn, without unnecessary risk. This approach has served me quite ok in the past 4 years.

Making money is not a risk. Not making money, when you should have, is a risk :)

Definitely will give it serious consideration!

hmmm...interesting strategy. I am no so keen on investing in stocks that I don't understand though. Also, I'm afraid of manipulation by big players on penny stocks. When my capital is bigger then i will try a bit. :)
BTW, how can brokerage just be RM15? even Jupiter has minimum 8, and if you double that to close the transaction, it's already RM16. if you're investing RM1k, you also have the RM2 contract fee and about 60 sen stamp duty. total fees almost RM20 at least.
2012-11-25 15:36 | Report Abuse
It was a big amateur error by me to forget to include the cost of fees. And yes, Breakeven point and breakeven periods are very important. I guess the skills acquired from the OSK investment challenge are not transferable at the moment due to the lack of capital.

Hmmm...you have an interesting theory. I guess our opinion on "potential upside" is slightly different.
I'm playing Maxis as a dividend growth stock as well as an appreciation stock. The soon to be announced dividend should cover any losses at the moment, and it's trading quite cheap now.
Good luck! Of course in a few months time I will report back whether i actually made anything with this stock or not.
Also, I'm looking at SIME. just looking though...no money to buy.

Yup, definitely lack of experience when it comes to shares. Like the article mentions, lessons learnt. :)
2012-11-24 23:41 | Report Abuse
hmmm? haha...@pauline yong, good point.
At the moment, using Maybank2U.
My main experience the came from OSK investment challege. Although no where near the top, every time I play my ranking inside the top 1000 people, profit like 8-9% per month from my portfolio.
However, in the game, you have RM100 000. So fees are quite small amounts.
Now, using my own money, I have much less than that, so by using the same portfolio strategy, Even though my shares earned quite ok, cannot cover fees!
Eg: I bought Astro at 2.54, the floor, based on my analysis. recently hit 2.67, a gain of 4.78% in about 5 days. But I only bought 100 shares, so didn't even earn enough to cover my fees.
So for small trader like me, I'm going to take more risk and trust my analysis, and play only 1 stock.

@TonyLim,quite true...something i tell my students also. The state of your life will be the state of your business will be the state of your relationships will be the state of your investments...etc...
wait, does that mean i'm emotionless? O.O
Anyways thanks for the comments...I'm learning something from everything.

SO by combining a dividned announcement, the financial statement, and the UMNO general assembly, should result in a stock boost? sounds plausible...
Telcos really being hammered lately..

They should be posting a dividend soon...strange that there's no news...usually they're quite on time when it comes to announcements?

Ah, so the EPF other big funds follow their recommendations? what if there is a conflict between them? like just take a look on the recommendations of, say, maybank, here:
http://klse.i3investor.com/servlets/ptg/1155.jsp
Not everyone is saying the same thing.
Does it make a good investment strategy, to examine the number of most recent recommendations on similar economic data, and then follow the recommendations of the majority?
Like the maybank example above, 9 out of 11 Research houses recommend BUY on Maybank. So a strategy is that since the majority of analysts are recommending Maybank, so we should buy. Plausible?
I will let you know in the future, because I went in significantly (without looking at research recommendations) at Rm9.02
So perhaps, we can see the effect of their recommendations.
P.S: today maybank closed at RM9.01

Hmm...but if they are doing it, and someone is paying them, it means someone thinks what they are doing is important.
who? Who perhaps what they post on public "research" and what they deliver to private clients is different? That could be the case.
if not, these people are not value adding.

Yup, Simplicity is most important. Especially in this current financial world, were the big players rely on ever more complex financial products to make profit, small fish like us need to stick to what we know.

Hmmm...personally i've never had any of my investments hit target price, so yes perhaps they are exaggerated.
Is their research reliable?
The idea is, we find out what information is available on the open market, try to predict the undisclosed information, and then make a trade.
Very difficult to do well with just outside information because most of it is already priced in.
Do the rating agencies have access to information that we don't? do they do full disclosure? is their information and predictions reliable?

Digi is now at a beautiful place for a buy...Market sentiment cannot bring it down lower unless a significant shareholder is dumping shares.
If I were Digi, and the shares went lower, would initiate buybacks.
same goes for maxis (9 days, 10% market losses) and TM (11 days, 12% market losses)
Almost back to 2011 levels...with no real change in operations, except for good news like higher data usage, fees, and the iphone 5.

has anyone here actually achieved a 10% monthly return? that you can double your money in a year?
personally, if i get 1-2% per month, I'm happy. :)

Admission: i have never once relied on the rating of a stock used by rating and research agencies, only the data and general trends.
What is the point of a prediction, if these agencies change them every week?
People pay money to these analysts? Has anyone here, relied on rating predictions like "buy" or "outperform" and have made a bundle?
your thoughts please! would like to see the extent of this community's reliance on the research agencies.

Yes of course. dliew888. You only get these "earnings" if you are in debt in the first place. Credit Card usually not a good idea, because assets purchased with credit card usually don't retain value.
I will show how to use debt as a powerful money-making tool, in order to maximize wealth, in the future. :)

it's an abonormal run on a traditionally strong counter. someone is dumping stock to induce a downward momentum, and will actually increase his holdings when the stock has been battered into the ground, and people realize that nothing about maxis actually changed...
