A city in eastern China has started offering a coronavirus vaccine to the general public - although it has not yet completed clinical trials.

(Oct 17): The eastern Chinese city of Yiwu in Zhejiang province is offering walk-in Covid-19 vaccines to residents, local media reported.

The vaccine was being administered on Friday at a city health service centre, according to the The Paper website. Residents are charged 400 yuan (US$60) for two shots of the treatment, with an added service fee of 28 yuan, it said.

A fourth vaccine being developed by CanSino Biologics was approved for use by the Chinese military in June.

On the other hand, an Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence and cloud computing company called Group 42 is nearing the end of Phase III clinical trials of a vaccine in partnership with CNBG.

CanSino Biologics/Beijing Institute of Biotechnology
CanSino Biologics, in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology, developed a candidate vaccine using a weakened adenovirus. Unlike the Oxford vaccine, which relies on an adenovirus that infects chimpanzees, CanSino Biologics is using an adenovirus that infects humans.

Along with Moderna, this group also published results from their phase 2 trial on July 20 in the journal The Lancet. The trial, which was conducted in Wuhan (where the first coronavirus cases emerged), involved 508 participants who were randomly assigned to receive either one of two different doses of the vaccine or a placebo.

This study also didn't find serious adverse events, though some reported mild or moderate reactions including fever, fatigue and injection site pain. Around 90% of the participants developed T-cell responses and about 85% developed neutralizing antibodies, according to the study.

PETALING JAYA: Kanger International Bhd has proposed a private placement to raise up to RM68.88mil.

The company said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia that in the event of a successful placement, it intended to allocate up to RM34.38mil (under the maximum scenario) for a potential investment into the healthcare industry, involving the distribution of a potential Covid-19 vaccine.

It will also allocate up to RM34.38mil as working capital for the procurement of raw materials, general administrative expenses, utilities, staff overheads and others.

The remainder of the funds of RM120,000 will be used by the company to defray the costs associated with this corporate exercise.

The exercise has an indicative issue price of 17.8 sen per placement share.


Kanger had on Sept 29 signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Sinopharm Group Hunan Changde Medical Co Ltd to be each other’s strategic representative or partner to undertake the distribution of a potential vaccine and medical equipment developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group Corp (Sinopharm) in Malaysia.

Both parties would enter into a definitive distribution agreement to set out further terms and conditions of the collaboration, it said.

Under the maximum scenario, Kanger’s private placement exercise will represent up to 20% of the total number of issued shares in the company.
