While uncertain when the elections will be called, the American investment bank believes the market will experience a relief rally should Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak lead BN to retain its current seats or win short of the two third majority in what is likely to be a fiercely contested GE.

A two third majority win by BN could trigger a big rally as such and as a result would ensure political stability, accelerate private and foreign direct investment and enable the execution of proposed projects announced under the economic transformation programmes.

The emergence of Lion Air presents AA with the most serious challenge to its dominance of the region's budget flight business.

AA operates 120 aircraft and expects 360 more to be delivered up to 2026, excluding leased aircraft.

AA has recently started operations in Indonesia, Philippine & Japan but is a small player in the market.

Lion Air has ambitious plans to start airlines across Asia-Pacific and is breaking into AirAsia's home market through Malindo Air.

LION Air's record aircraft orders underline the ambitious plans the privately held Indonesian group is hatching to emerge as a pan-Asian low cost carrier, throwing a serious challenge to AA.

Folks, the rivalry intensified last Friday when Lion Air launched its first service in Malaysia, barging onto AA's home turf.

Lion Air and AirAsia are already challenging each other in their respective home markets. The danger is that too many planes will drive down ticket prices.

Fluctuations in currencies and fuel costs are a further potential headache.

The new aircraft won't all fly at once. Lion Air's latest order is spread over the next 13 years, and is partly intended to replace existing planes.

AirAsia has the flexibility to move planes between subsidiaries and ventures across Asia, while Lion Air can lease aircraft to other operators.

2. The carrier's plan mirrors the strategy of AirAsia Bhd that has set up ventures across the region to become Southeast Asia's biggest discount operator.

3. Lion is also setting up a Malaysian venture to challenge AirAsia's grip on the region's budget travel market. Malindo Airways, which will draw its fleet from planes ordered by Lion Air Group, aims to start flights this year.
