Folks, Lion could potentially exploit the opportunity to add capacity on its two Singapore routes, Jakarta and Surabaya, which it now serves with six and one daily frequency respectively.

Lion could also potentially resume Singapore-Bali service and launch Singapore-Medan.

But Lion expansion in Singapore is considered less likely than Mandala and Garuda expansion because Lion is currently more focused on the Indonesian domestic market and expanding new subsidiaries Malindo and Batik.

Folks, sadly there is no immediate benefit from the expanded bilateral for Indonesia AA as the carrier already held traffic rights for Singapore to Medan and Surabaya, with slots at Changi preventing the carrier from using these rights.

So for now AA is not interested in expanding in the Jakarta-Singapore or Bali-Singapore routes, which it already serves with six and four daily frequencies respectively.

Folks, as a result the Tiger Group will likely be operating over 100 weekly frequencies between Indonesia and Singapore by the end of 2013.

If AA continues to be stymied in attempts to expand in the market, Tiger will surpass it as the largest LCC group in the market by capacity.

The additional flights from Tiger-Mandala in the Jakarta, Bali, Medan and Surabaya markets are made possible by the newly expanded bilateral between Indonesia and Singapore.

The new agreement stipulates a 50% increase in capacity for all four of the main routes between the two countries.

Folks, the most significant impact is in the Jakarta-Singapore market as carriers have been unable to add capacity in this market in recent years as both sides were fully or nearly fully utilising all the available capacity.

Folks, while AA for the time being will retain a larger share of the total market despite operating a fewer number of routes, the Tiger Group is planning to increase capacity on several of its existing Indonesia-Singapore routes by the end of 2013.

Jakarta-Singapore is expected to see at least a doubling of frequencies from three to six and possibly as many as seven or eight.

Folks, a second daily frequency is also likely in the other three markets covered by the Indonesia-Singapore bilateral – Bali, Medan and Surabaya.

Folks, AA for now is the largest LCC in the Indonesia-Singapore market, with 95 weekly frequencies and 17,100 one-way weekly seats.

Once the new Bandung and Yogyakarta services commence, the Tiger Group will have 60 weekly frequencies and 10,800 weekly one-way seats, up from 46 weekly frequencies and 8,280 weekly seats currently.

Folks, with eight additional A320s slated for delivery in 2013 (for a year-end total of 30 aircraft), Indonesia AA has the capacity to grow further and keep up with competitors in the Singapore market while also expanding its presence domestically, where it is relatively small.

But folks, the slot constraints at Changi are starting to undermine the carrier’s position and will likely result in AA losing its status as the largest LCC group in the key Indonesia-Singapore market.

Folks, the freedom to add capacity to existing markets such as Singapore-Bandung and add new routes from Singapore is critical for Indonesia AA’s future outlook.

The carrier relies heavily on Singapore, which accounts for nearly 20% of its total seat capacity and about one-third of its international capacity.

Singapore as a result drives Indonesia AA's current position as the largest international carrier in the Indonesian market, based on passengers carried.

Folks, there may be another round of delay in the completion of klia2, which was slated to be opened by June 28, 2013 may affect AA expansion plan.

Indonesia AA was a pioneer on the Bandung-Singapore route, becoming the first carrier to serve the market in 2009.

Folks, AA could instead mount a campaign in Singapore, where over the years it has had a rocky relationship, to try to persuade Changi to approve its pending applications.

Folks, it is extremely frustrating for Indonesia AA to see Tiger enter two routes where it is currently the only LCC (Bandung and Yogyakarta) and be unable to respond by adding capacity in these markets and by entering new markets which Tiger-Mandala already serve such as Medan and Surabaya.

Indonesia AA could try to persuade Indonesian authorities to raise a complaint with their Singaporean counterparts of an unlevel playing field.

But folks, Indonesia AA does not have the lobbying power that Garuda enjoys and even if the concern is raised by Indonesia the Singaporean authorities may not respond favourably.

AA intends to re-submit all its Indonesia-Singapore applications for the northern hemisphere summer season.

But folks, the group is not confident that Changi will approve its new requests and is concerned that slot constraints at Singapore will continue to impact its ability to compete and maintain its strong position in the Indonesia-Singapore market.

Folks, AA says Changi has informed the group that there are currently no available slots for new flights to Medan, Surabaya or Bandung in the current summer schedule but that it can re-apply for the winter schedule, which begins at the end of Oct-2013.

Medan and Surabaya to Singapore would be new routes for Indonesia AA while the carrier already serves the Bandung-Singapore market with two daily flights and has been seeking slots to support a third daily frequency.

Rwemember folks, Indonesia AA first attempted to launch services from Singapore to Medan and Surabaya in 2012.

But Singapore sat on these applications for several months last year while approving similar applications from Mandala, which launched services on the Medan-Singapore route in Apr-2012 and on Surabaya-Singapore in Jan-2013.

Folks, SIA currently accounts for about 26% of seat capacity in the Indonesia-Singapore market.

AirAsia is currently the second largest carrier in the Singapore-Indonesia market with about a 19% share of capacity, followed by Garuda and Lion with about 11% each.

SilkAir and the Jetstar and Tiger groups each currently have about a 9% share of seat capacity in the Indonesia-Singapore market.

But folks, SIA will see its share of capacity in the market increase to approximately 30% on 26-Jul-2013, when it introduces a ninth daily frequency to Jakarta and a fourth daily frequency to Bali.

Folks, SIA Group carriers have an advantage in responding to increasing demand in the Indonesia-Singapore market, as well as opportunities made available from the new bilateral agreement, because they seem to have at their disposal a sufficient number of additional slots at Changi.

Tiger is particularly in a strong position in the Indonesia-Singapore market as the only airline group with subsidiaries or affiliates in both Singapore and Indonesia.

So folks, this gives Tiger an edge over rival LCC groups AAsia, Lion and Jetstar as it has the flexibility to access slots and traffic rights from either side.

Competition in the Indonesia-Singapore market will intensify in 3Q2013 with SIA adding capacity while its regional subsidiary SilkAir and low-cost affiliate Tiger Airways each launch services to two new Indonesian destinations.

Garuda Indonesia, Tiger affiliate Mandala Airlines and Jetstar are all planning to follow SIA, SilkAir and Tiger in adding capacity in the dynamic Indonesia-Singapore market.

The surge in capacity is in part made possible by a newly expanded bilateral agreement between the two countries.

Slot constraints, however, threaten to impede growth for some carriers operating in the market and make it difficult to use newly awarded traffic rights.

For example, Indonesia AAsia has already been set back by slot constraints at Changi Airport in attempts to launch three new routes to Singapore.

So how, folks!

Queens Park Rangers' Malaysian owner, Tony Fernandes, says the club's relegation from the Premier League has left him feeling exploited.

Fernandes, who has made his wealth in the airline and music industries, acquired QPR in August 2011 and he estimates that he has ploughed around STG50 million ($A76.31 million) into the London club since he took over.

The 49-year-old admits that he has occasionally let people take advantage of him, but he has vowed that he will not make the same mistakes again.

"I don't think I will be exploited any more," he said, in comments reported by several British newspapers on Saturday.

"I think I allowed myself to be exploited, but that's my choice. Agents are trying to get the best contracts and there's no two ways about it - I had to pay premiums.

"I've seen all of the parts that make football quite - maybe 'immoral' is a strong word, but they would sell their grandmother to do something. It's all part of the football ecosystem."

Fernandes expressed regret over the club's decision to allow outspoken midfielder Joey Barton to join French side Marseille on a season-long loan deal.

"We missed Joey," he said. "We needed a workhorse midfielder and we tried to get (Tottenham Hotspur midfielder) Scott Parker.

"We missed a real leader. We tried to get (Tottenham centre-back) Michael Dawson. To be fair to (former manager) Mark Hughes, he said we needed two centre-halves.

"This has been a tragic season in many ways. It is a Shakespearean play in the making."

Fernandes also revealed that manager Harry Redknapp and the majority of the playing squad would be forced to accept pay cuts in the second-tier Championship next season.

"Do we have relegation clauses? Yes. Do all the players have them? No. But at least 60 per cent do," he said.

Questioned about Redknapp, who is due to stay on in his position, Fernandes said: "Yes. His salary goes down as well.

"We have been made out not to be sensible, stupid. Guys on TV have torn me apart. We are not stupid."

The ministry has asked for names and nationalities of the airlines' chairman, chief executive officer, chief financial officer and chief technical officer, sources said.

These details, sources said, would be sent to the home ministry for a security clearance, in case the executives are foreign nationals.

While the Indian aviation ministry went out of the way to make Jet-Etihad deal happen, it raised an alarm when AAsia applied to start India operations. In absence of the aviation policy, the working of ministry remains non-transparent and it changes rules at the drop of a hat.

It was a pleasant morning in March this year when officials of the Finance Ministry in North Block received a googly from Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, which houses the civil aviation ministry.

As preparations were on for a meeting of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) that would, among other things, discuss AAsia's proposal to invest in an Indian airline, came in the opinion of wise men in the civil aviation ministry like a bombmshell: the freshly liberalised foreign direct investment policy (FDI) would apply only to airlines which are already in operation and not new venture like the one proposed by the Malaysia-based budget carrier.

In effect, the argument was that AAsia cannot invest in the airline that was to be jointly promoted by the Tata Group and Telestra Tradeplace, owned by Lakshmi Mittal's son-in-law, along with AAsia.

Remember, this was the time the Indian government was pushing hard to attract more foreign investment to stem the rupee's slide and prevent India's credit rating from being downgraded.

When all the big guns in the economic ministries were trying to promote FDI, Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan was moving in the opposite direction!

With the group now realising it remains unlikely it will be able to get approval in the short to medium term for additional overnight parking spots, it is not logical to continue with a one-aircraft base.

The group’s early morning departure to Kuala Lumpur also has not been successful from a load factor standpoint although it was important in providing connections to other AirAsia and AirAsia X flights.

As a result of its decision to close the Changi base, AA will be moving back its Singapore-based crews to Kuala Lumpur.

The 555am departure from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur will be discontinued. A date has not yet been set but it is expected to be pulled from the AA schedule within the next couple of months.

Bad news for AIRASIA, folks!!!!!!

Folks, AA decided in late 2011 to start basing aircraft in Changi to enable early morning departures and late night arrivals on its biggest Singapore routes, which rivals Tiger and Jetstar Asia are able to offer as they are based in Singapore.

The original plans was for the Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai affiliates to all have at least one aircraft based at Changi with interchangeable crews that are licensed in more than one country.

AA also has been able to build up a similarly sized presence in Singapore without having a local affiliate or operating certificate.

The group currently serves Singapore from 13 destinations using four of its subsidiaries or affiliates Malaysia based AirAsia Berhad, Indonesia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and AirAsia Philippines.

There you go, folks!

Folks, passenger growth at Singapore is slowing significantly, making it very unlikely Changi will expand in 2013 its current streak of three consecutive years of double-digit expansion.

Growth in the low to mid single digits will provide some breathing space for authorities to tackle increasing congestion problems.

But Singapore authorities should still accelerate airport expansion, particularly the opening of a third runway, because the current congestion has already become an impediment to growth.

In the latest blow to Changi, AA has decided to close its Singapore base. Shifting back to Malaysia the group’s small contingent of Singapore-based crews will have a very slight impact on total passenger figures at Changi.

But it signals the challenges Changi faces as its LCC growth figures start to slow down while other airports in the region continue to record rapid increases.

The AA decision follows Qantas moving its transit hub for European services from Singapore to Dubai, leading to a reduction in total Changi capacity of more than 2%.

Look before you leap at AA’s low-cost fares

Folks, other low-cost carriers are already considering unbundling services they offer. In such a scenario, if AA India starts the trend, others are sure to follow.

On the whole, if the airlines are going to charge for everything else other than tickets, low-cost flying may end up as an extremely high-cost affair for the customers.

However, AA’s India plans are being greeted by positive news on the domestic front.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!

Look before you leap at AA’s low-cost fares

AA does not allow free check-in of baggage globally. Customers usually book it along with the tickets, the report says.

Folks, according to the report, other low-cost carriers are already considering unbundling services they offer.

Other LCCs are likely to get the same policy to India, enabling us to at least lower the current free checkin weight from 20 kg to at least 15 kg.

Folks, this is likely to set new terms for other players in the industry here.

So how?

Look before you leap at AA’s low-cost fares

Folks, this news could be a bit of a disappointment for those who thought AA is the harbinger of the real cheap fares in the Indian aviation.

According to a report in the Times of India, customers may be able to take advantage of the lower fares the company but will have to pay extra for baggage check-in.
