Local Indian low-cost carriers to rework new strategy with entry of Airasia. Airasia's foray comes at a time the airline industry is in turmoil with passenger traffic sliding.

Folks, the number of passengers in fact shrunk 7.3% in November on a year-on-year.

Folks, operating costs in India remain high compared to Southeast Asia due to punitive fuel taxes, high airport charges and inefficient infrastructure. This is combined with high inflation and interest rates and GDP growth running at its lowest level in a decade.

RESEARCH firms estimate Airasia's financial performance to experience short-term hiccups this year, with the entry of Malindo Airways into the local aviation industry.

Malindo's entry into Malaysia will be the immediate threat for Airasia while the risk of higher fuel cost is still high in 2013.

Folks, for info FY12 core net profit increased by only 5% only despite a stronger 12% increase in the revenue.

This was due to the higher increase in its fuel cost, staff cost and maintenance and aircraft related costs.

Folks, a Roadblock ahead for Airasia India?

Airasia's India venture may hit rough weather, aviation sources told NDTV Profit, based on the ministry's interpretation of foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in the sector.

day before the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) meeting to look into Airasia’s proposed joint venture to launch a new airline here, the Aviation Ministry is understood to have opposed the plan, saying the new FDI rules are meant for existing carriers only.

The ministry's opposition comes amid reports in a section of the media that Airasia Group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was keen to kick off his airline in the country as early as May-June, instead of his earlier plan of towards the year-end.

The FIPB is slated to take up Airasia’s JV proposal with the Tatas and Arun Bhatia on Wednesday. The Ministry is understood to have expressed its reservations in a note to FIPB, stating that the new company should have been formed before seeking the government’s nod.

An another aspect where Airasia differs from airlines in India is its stress on ancillary revenue.

It sells tickets at rock bottom prices but charges for virtually all services - onboard meals, entertainment, preferred seats, pillows, baggage and so on.

Full service airlines give a preferential treatment to their executive class passengers whereas Airasia does the same at a charge.

Known as Air Asia Red Carpet it offers passengers special check in counters, priority baggage delivery and use of lounge for a fee.

Folks, in 2011, 18% of Air Asia's revenue came from ancillary sources.

If Arasia Indian plans receive the go-ahead from the authorities - both the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) Airasia India will be the first success of the new foreign direct investment (FDI) rules allowing foreign airlines to acquire up to 49 per cent in Indian carriers.

Thus, this will also help Tony Fernandes because the AirAsia group has a massive 350 Airbus A320 planes on order.

So how does the airline keeps its cost under control?

About 85% of Airasia tickets are sold through its website limiting agents' commission (In India about 70-80% of tickets are sold through offline agents and portals).

In Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok Airasia flies to low cost terminals (there are none in India).

"We get rebate in landing and parking charges at Bangkok,'' explains Benyamin Ismail who handles the investor relations in Airasia.

Other aspects of cost optimisation include higher aircraft utilisation (12-14 hours daily), lower turn around time (25-30 minutes), use of dedicated kiosks for passenger check-in reducing the manpower requirement.

Stock

2013-02-26 10:08 | Report Abuse

Airasia's unit costs are significantly lower than Indian carriers due to use of low cost terminals, lower distribution costs, single aircraft type operation and higher aircraft utilisation amongst others.

Unit costs or cost per available seat kilometre (CASK) refers to expenses incurred on flying a seat (filled or empty) over a kilometre.

A J P Morgan report shows Airasia's CASK is (4.4 cents) is lower than SpiceJet (6.4 cents), JetLite (7.5 cents) and Jet Airways (9 cents).

Airasia claims that its CASK (along with Ryan Air) is the lowest amongst all airlines.

Folks, one of the reasons for low operating costs is that aviation fuel is not taxed in Malaysia.

Stock

2013-02-26 09:56 | Report Abuse

Airasia can afford the low costs because its per unit costs are amongst the lowest amongst all airlines and earns about 18% of all revenue from ancillary sources.

However, experts say replicating the business model in India will be a challenge because of high cost structure and taxes.
