KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it is too drastic to ban the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and vape products containing nicotine.

“Taking extreme action to ban vaping, e-cigarettes, is quite drastic, and cannot be done in any country in the world. Many people still smoke, even if we hold [several] campaigns,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (April 4).

KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): The 1.66 million barrels per day (bpd) "voluntary" output cut by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (Opec+) was a positive surprise, as the market was expecting the status quo to remain, said Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB).

In a note on Tuesday (April 4), Maybank IB said that Opec+ had continued to play its role as a formidable swing producer, and remained a very much disciplined pact collectively.

“We are keeping our oil price forecast unchanged at US$100 a barrel (bbl) (dated Brent crude) for 2023, with an upside bias.

“Oil prices could sustain above US$100 per bbl should Opec+ take a stand to see an elevated oil price policy over higher output.

This law has been called many names like the Generational End Game (GEG) and ‘Anti-Rokok-18’. But the goal remains the same: to create a smoke-free Malaysia by making it illegal for the next generation or anyone born after 2007 to take a puff in their entire lifetime even after they’ve reached the age of 18 – which is the current legal age of smoking here in Malaysia.

Khairy calls this a “soft landing” approach to bring a gradual end to smoking and plans to get the bill passed by year’s end.

Although the law seems like a good idea, it is getting a lot of pushback from policymakers, medical professionals, industry players, experts in all sorts of fields and, of course, the public.

But if the GEG is seen as such a good plan, why are people saying that the Government might be rushing into its implementation?

Well, there have been several arguments made on why we might need more time to study the proposed prohibition and its effects on the country as a whole.

OK, so the Government wants to implement one of the most ambitious public health plans EVER—by banning the use, possession and sale of cigarette and vape products for people born after 2007.

The plan was introduced by Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin earlier this year and a bill for the proposed law has already been tabled for reading in Parliament.

LONDON: U.S. President Joe Biden has called on Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers to increase their oil output to help stabilise prices, which have surged as a result of a strong rebound in consumption after the pandemic and now sanctions on Russia.

But Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members probably do not have much spare capacity to raise output by a significant amount for more than a few months.

Previous appeals to Saudi Arabia to secure production increases and lower prices in 2008 by President George W Bush and in 2000 by President Bill Clinton were essentially fruitless; Biden is unlikely to be any more successful.
