WASHINGTON — The risk of death, hospitalisation and serious health issues from Covid-19 jumps significantly with reinfection compared with a first bout with the virus, regardless of vaccination status, a study published on Thursday (Nov 10) suggests.

Reinfection with Covid-19 increases the risk of both acute outcomes and long Covid, said Dr Ziyad Al-Aly of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. This was evident in unvaccinated, vaccinated and boosted people.

The findings were drawn from US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) data collected from March 1, 2020 through April 6, 2022 on 443,588 patients with one SARS-CoV-2 infection, 40,947 with two or more infections, and 5.3 million noninfected individuals.

Most of the study subjects were male.
Reinfected patients had a more than doubled risk of death and a more than tripled risk of hospitalisation compared with those who were infected with Covid just once.
They also had elevated risks for problems with lungs, heart, blood, kidneys, diabetes, mental health, bones and muscles, and neurological disorders, according to a report published in Nature Medicine.
"Even if one had prior infection and was vaccinated — meaning they had double immunity from prior infection plus vaccines — they are still susceptible to adverse outcomes upon reinfection," Dr Al-Aly, the study leader, said.

People in the study with repeat infections were more than three times more likely to develop lung problems, three times more likely to suffer heart conditions and 60 per cent more likely to experience neurological disorders than patients who had been infected only once.

The higher risks were most pronounced in the first month after reinfection but were still evident six months later, researchers found.

Experts not involved with the study said the VA population does not reflect the general population.

Patients at VA health facilities are generally older, sicker people and often men, a group that would typically have more than normal health complications, said Dr John Moore, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

Long Covid at 12 months persists at 18 months, study shows

The researchers said cumulative risks and burdens of repeat infection increased with the number of infections, even after accounting for differences in Covid-19 variants such as Delta, Omicron and BA.5.
However, Dr Celine Gounder, an infectious disease epidemiologist and an editor-at-large at Kaiser Health News, said there seemed to be a "plateauing effect with multiple infections," with less of a jump in risk after the second infection.

"The good news there is that the better people are protected with immunity, likely the risk of developing some of the complications will be lower over time," she added.
Still, Dr Al-Aly cautioned that people should not let their guard down.

"We had started seeing a lot of patients coming to the clinic with an air of invincibility," he told Reuters. "They wondered, 'Does getting a reinfection really matter?' The answer is yes, it absolutely does."

Ahead of the fast-approaching holiday season with travel and indoor gatherings, "people should be aware that reinfection is consequential and should take precautions," he added. REUTERS

COPENHAGEN - As winter approaches, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday stressed the importance of staying vigilant as cases of Covid-19 and influenza rise in Europe, encouraging more people to get vaccinated.

“This is not a time to relax,” WHO Europe director Hans Kluge told a press conference.

The 53 countries that make up the WHO Europe region, which includes Russia and countries in Central Asia, were once again at the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of new Covid-19 cases worldwide, Dr Kluge said.

European, US officials track BQ.1 Omicron subvariant rises
Oct 24, 2022

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) late last week projected that the Omicron BQ.1 sublineage and its offshoots will likely fuel rises in COVID-19 activity in the weeks and months ahead.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said last week that BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are spreading relatively quickly, but still make up a small proportion of the overall variant picture.

As summer drew to a close, health officials warned that a variety of Omicron subvariants could drive a winter surge, but now there seem to be a few frontrunners, such as BQ.1 in Europe and XBB in parts of Asia...

Covid is NOT over.
Please please, all take care and be safe.

Oct 23 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden will get his updated COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday and urge more Americans to get the latest shot, White House spokesman Kevin Munoz said on Sunday.

Only 20 million people in the United States have received an updated COVID vaccine through last week. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday it was not enough. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week 4.5 million Americans had received the updated vaccine over the past week, the largest weekly increase since the fall vaccination program launched and up about 40% from the prior week.

The United States started rolling out the updated COVID shots in September, designed to take on the circulating BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants and the original version of the virus.

Biden in July tested positive for COVID with mild symptoms and tested positive in a rebound case seen in a small percentage of people who take the antiviral drug Paxlovid. In August, he tested negative twice and ended his more than two weeks of isolation at the White House.

With winter ahead, Germany reconsiders mask mandates
October 17, 2022

The number of COVID-19 infections is rising, and hospitals are filling up. While some countries say the pandemic is over, lawmakers in Germany are calling for tighter protective measures as winter approaches.
Fall has arrived in Germany, and colorful autumn leaves swirl over Berlin's Kurfürstendamm boulevard, where high-end stores line either side of the historic street: clothing, perfume, gifts. Ku'damm, as Berliners call it, thrives on people seduced by the luxury products displayed in shop windows.

Right now, the coronavirus pandemic seems a distant memory. Social distancing is a thing of the past, and only a handful of customers wear face masks in shops. Signs asking people to wear them have also disappeared.
But that could all change soon. Hospitals are sounding the alarm, with more and more doctors and health care workers pushing for a speedy reintroduction of mandatory mask-wearing indoors.

As the number of coronavirus infections increases, so does the pressure on hospitals. In many clinics, normal operations are no longer possible.
Germany's public health institute, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), says there are already as many coronavirus patients in hospitals as there were during this year's peak. And the numbers are going up.

Now, Berlin and Brandenburg are the first of Germany's 16 federal states considering a reintroduction of mandatory masks for indoor public spaces, at least in retail.

German hospitals filling up.
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, a Social Democrat (SPD) lawmaker, says Germany is well-prepared for fall and winter thanks to adapted vaccines and medicines. Despite that, he warns of what might lie ahead.
"The direction we're headed is not a good one," he recently said, referring to the situation in Germany's hospitals. Deaths are also increasing despite the current omicron variant causing less severe cases.

At the moment, Germany's intensive care units are mostly occupied by elderly patients and others whose health risks remain high even with the milder omicron variant.
According to the Association of German Hospitals (DKG), most COVID-19 patients are being treated in normal wards. They are often admitted with a coronavirus infection, not severe COVID-19 symptoms. Still, infected patients have to be isolated, which requires more space, and more personnel...

Where is the coronavirus surging around the world?
Signs point to a surge in Europe, which could foretell another winter wave in the United States.
Cases rose by 104 percent in Portugal and 42 percent in Switzerland over the past week, while the virus has also surged in Germany, France, Italy and Austria, according to The Washington Post’s coronavirus tracker.

The World Health Organization and European Center for Disease Prevention and Control warned Wednesday that the continent is probably entering a new covid wave, which will coincide with a resurgence in the flu. In the ECDC’s latest weekly report, it noted “widespread increases were being observed in all indicators,” including cases, hospitalizations and deaths across the continent.

Covid cases are also up in parts of Asia, including South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, which have dropped most of their travel restrictions in recent months.

In Singapore, which has seen a 44 percent increase in the average number of daily reported cases over the past week, the Ministry of Health said Saturday that an omicron subvariant known as XBB jumped from a 22 percent share of local cases to 54 percent over the course of a week.

When cases rise in Europe, it’s often “just a matter of weeks or months” until a surge follows in the United States, said Sanjana Ravi, a visiting assistant scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“We saw that with the delta variant. We saw that with the omicron variant,” Ravi said. “I think it’s safe to take precautions considering that we’re starting to see those numbers go up again in Europe now.”

PARIS - With winter approaching, France has “officially” entered its eighth wave of Covid-19. Over 50,000 daily cases have been confirmed and French health officials are considering whether to once again impose masks in public places and transport.

The Health Ministry warned last month that a new wave was imminent after cases jumped by 55.5%. The figures from the Health Ministry and health authority Santé publique France show the daily average of contagion at around 17,000 and rising. The situation in France reflects the resurgence of the epidemic brewing in Europe as cooler weather arrives, “with public health experts warning that vaccine fatigue and confusion over types of available vaccines will likely limit booster uptake,” Reuters explains. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has reported that fifteen countries in the region are reporting increasing cases with the highest new infection rates in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Latvia and Liechtenstein.

Behind most of the cases is the Omicron subvariants BA.4/5 that dominated this summer but the World Health Organization is tracking many new subvariants that are gaining ground. According to its most recent data, the number of cases in the European Union reached 1.5 million last week, up 8% from the prior week as the number of hospitalizations across the member nations and Britain continue to mount.

“In the week ended October 4, Covid-19 hospital admissions with symptoms jumped nearly 32% in Italy, while intensive care admissions rose about 21%, compared to the week before, according to data compiled by independent scientific foundation Gimbe,” Reuters report....

Singapore - A new Omicron sub-variant, known as the XBB, has been driving a significant surge in COVID-19 cases in Singapore, local media reported.

The island country in Southeast Asia reported an average of 7,716 local cases per day in the past week, compared with a daily average of 2,000 last month, according to data from Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH).

On Tuesday, the number of new cases reached 11,732, a recent new high and more than double the previous day's number.

Singapore's Health Minister Ong Ye Kung expected the caseload to further increase to 15,000 cases per day on average, and could even reach 20,000 or 25,000 on some days.

The infections are likely to peak in mid-November, he said on Saturday, noting that "this is likely to be a short and sharp wave."

There has also been an increase in hospitalized cases, but the number of severe cases has remained relatively low, the MOH said, adding it's "very likely due to the resilience built up through vaccination and previous waves of infection."

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 13): Share prices of rubber glove makers stole the limelight on Bursa Malaysia on Thursday (Oct 13), with Hartalega Holdings Bhd’s shares leading the gains in terms of value gains.

When contacted, Malacca Securities head of research Loui Low Ley Yee told The Edge that rotational play kicked in, as investors swapped sectors from technology to rubber gloves, as the market has fully priced in the anticipated downside risk for gloves including acute oversupply and margin compression due to the falling average selling price (ASP) of gloves.

“Because the market has priced in everything (downside risks), any uptick or rebound in ASP, gloves will benefit. Investors have factored in (risks such as) overstretch in valuation and drop in earnings; now perhaps it has [already hit] bottom for the (glove stocks’) earnings and will recover soon.

“In contrast, [the] technology [sector] has more room to drop due to overstretching in valuation. The sector’s earnings are expected to come down, given the layoffs news from the big tech companies, coupled with the US ban on chips sales to China, this could be a repercussion towards the downward cycle of the demand (for semiconductor products) and that worries the market. So, we should be seeing a slowdown in technology companies’ earnings. That is what I am anticipating. So, glove stocks [are a] safer bet to invest in,” Low added....

Low also quoted Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturing Association (Margma) as saying that glove supply-demand equilibrium is expected within six- to nine months. To recap, Margma president Dr Supramaniam Shanmugan had last month said the normalisation of equilibrium conditions for gloves supply-demand will occur within six- to nine months, based on the depletion of inventory in the pipeline.

Against this backdrop, Low said investors will have to start positioning themselves for glove stocks, in anticipation of glove counters’ earnings stabilising amid a normalised ASP by then.

Coronavirus: Omicron subvariant XBB.1 is strongest by far in vaccine evasion, a Hong Kong expert has warned.
A new Covid subvariant- XBB.1- which was recently detected for the first time in Hong Kong has sparked concerns as it has the strongest ability by far to evade vaccine protection, leading expert Dr Gilman Siu Kit-hang warned according to a report in South China Morning Post. The expert also said that there could be more strains during the winters.

Here are 5 points on Omicron XBB.1 subvariant:
1. Dr Gilman Siu Kit-hang said that research indicates that the Omicron subvariant XBB.1 which was found in an imported infection is a combination of BA.2.10 and BA.2.75.
2. The subvariant is more evasive to vaccine immunity than other known variants.
3. Dr Gilman Siu Kit-hang said XBB.1 was first found in Singapore, while Nepal and Bangladesh have also recorded cases of XBB.1.
4. Dr Gilman Siu Kit-hang said that it was difficult to say whether XBB.1 would become the dominant strain in Hong Kong.
5. Issuing a serious warning, the expert said that more mutant strains were expected to emerge in the winter throughout the world...

Oct 12 (Reuters) - Another wave of COVID-19 infections may have begun in Europe as cases begin to tick up across the region, the World Health Organization and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said on Wednesday.

"Although we are not where we were one year ago, it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic is still not over," WHO's Europe director, Hans Kluge, and ECDC's director, Andrea Ammon, said in a joint statement.

"We are unfortunately seeing indicators rising again in Europe, suggesting that another wave of infections has begun."

WHO's region-wise data showed that only Europe recorded a rise in COVID-19 cases in the week ended Oct. 2, clocking an increase of 8% from the prior week.

Public health experts have warned that vaccine fatigue and confusion over available vaccines will likely limit booster uptake in the region. Millions of people across Europe remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, the WHO and ECDC noted.

They urged European countries to administer both flu and COVID-19 vaccines ahead of an expected surge in cases of seasonal influenza.

"There was no time to lose," the WHO and ECDC said, adding that vulnerable groups, including people over 60 years old, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities, should get vaccinated against both influenza and COVID-19...

New variants of the rapidly mutating coronavirus are still popping up around the world, and a new iteration of COVID on the rise in Asia may be the most immune-evasive yet.

The XBB strain is causing a small surge in cases in countries like Bangladesh and Singapore. The latter has recorded a daily average of about 5,500 cases over the past week, compared to a daily average of 2,000 cases a month ago.

Officials in Singapore, which is scaling back its last remaining COVID restrictions to reopen to the rest of the world, are not yet concerned about the increase in cases. On Monday, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung noted that only 15% of the country’s recent COVID cases were reinfections. “If you start to see 50% getting it a second time, you’re going to have a wave,” he said. The health ministry did start doling out Moderna’s Omicron booster on Tuesday, three days ahead of schedule, citing rising infections caused by the new “XBB Omicron subvariant.”

Hospitalizations in Singapore have increased alongside the rise in cases, yet deaths remain low, with fewer than a dozen recorded in the country over the past week. Over 90% of Singapore’s population has received two doses of a COVID vaccine, and 79% have received at least one booster.

Bangladesh is also reporting a small uptick in cases, though reported numbers are smaller than Singapore’s. The South Asian country reported a daily average of about 500 cases during the week of Oct. 3, compared to an average of 300 cases a month earlier. Bangladesh has a vaccination rate of 75.5%.

On Monday, Hong Kong’s health authorities said they found the city’s first case of XBB.1, a subvariant of the XBB strain, in an imported case from the U.S. Officials said the positive case showed no symptoms...

The new strain is “probably the most immune-evasive yet” due to its combination of mutations from other strains, Raj Rajnarayanan, a professor at the New York Institute of Technology’s Jonesboro, Ark., campus, told Fortune in September. A preprint study from Oct. 4, authored by researchers at Peking University and Changping Laboratory, found that XBB had the greatest ability to evade antibody protections among newly emerging variants.

Experts are also concerned that monoclonal antibody treatments might be less effective against newer variants like XBB and BA.2.75.2. “We’ve not seen this type of immune evasion before,” Michael Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), told Fortune earlier this month.
